About Me

I'm a little bit hyper, very friendly and come totally house-trained. I'm a very happy and laid back person and find it easy to get along with almost everyone. I have a passion for life and I value adventure and new experiences more than anything else. Life is short and I want to experience as much as possible!

I used to be a policeman in England. It was one hell of an adventure and has given me a lot of good stories to tell!

However...as much as I loved my job I was finding it increasingly hard to ignore the wanderlust so I quit my career to travel around the world indefinitely.

That was 18 months ago now and I'm extremely glad that I made the choice I did! I've had a wealth of incredible experiences already and have no intention of stopping any time soon.

I am increasingly drawn to the ideas of communal living and sustainable living. These have become my life-goals and I want to learn as much as I can.

Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those timid spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat." - Theodore Roosevelt

"A lot of us first aspired to far-ranging travel and exotic adventure in our early teens; these ambitions are, in fact, adolescent in nature, which I find an inspiring idea....Thus when we allow ourselves to imagine as we once did, we know, with a sudden jarring clarity that if we don't go right now we're never going to do it. And we'll be haunted by our unrealized dreams and know that we have sinned against ourselves gravely." - Tim Cahill

"Before the development of tourism, travel was conceived to be like study and it's fruits were considered to be the adornment of the mind and the formation of judgement. The traveller was a student of what he sought." - Paul Fussell

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

This quote sums up EXACTLY why I am on Couchsurfing:

"Those who visit foreign nations but associate only with their fellow countrymen, change their climate but not their customs. They see new meridians but the same men; and with heads as empty as their pockets, return home with travelled bodies but untraveled minds."

I want to connect with each country that I visit through the food, culture, natural beauty and the people! Meeting new people and having interesting conversations is one of my favourite things in life.

Music, Movies, and Books

Any art that evokes an emotional reaction; whatever that emotion may be, is alright by me.

Favourite films include Fight Club, Pulp Fiction, Memento, Withnail & I, Goodfellas, Requiem For A Dream, Into the Wild and Good Morning Vietnam.

Books were my first true love and I often have more than one on the go at any given time. Favourites include 1984, Filth, To Kill a Mockingbird, Of Mice and Men, The Vagina Monologues, The Art of War, Papillon, Derren Brown: Tricks of the Mind, The Origin of Species, Join Me, The God Delusion, World War Z, Day of the Triffids, Lord of the Rings, We Need to Talk About Kevin, The Dice Man.

I grew up listening to a lot of metal (Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Metallica, Slipknot, Pantera, Cradle of Filth, System of a Down, Slayer) and now I have a little bit of everything in my collection (Johnny Cash, Combichrist, Tracy Chapman, The Prodigy, Skunk Anansie, Beethoven, Queen). Good music is good music, regardless of genre.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

That's like asking somebody to pick just one type of cheese - impossible!

I'll choose this one because it makes for a first rate anecdote:

I had a near-death experience, deep underground, in a cave filled with human skeletons, in rural Indonesia.
(SPOILER: I didn't die.)

Teach, Learn, Share

I am very interested in learning about the lives and attitudes of normal people from all different walks of life, in different places. It's the reason that I travel; there are so many things to learn that cannot be read in books...

What I Can Share with Hosts

Stories, a laugh, some good times and friendship.

I'm also a very respectful, clean and hard working person. I would be happy to help out around the house as my way of saying thank you to anyone kind enough to allow me into their home.
