ABOUT ME

Well, there are actaully two of us! James Mathias, 28 hails from Christchurch Nz...Passionate about music and music production and has spent ten years as a professional chef. Raewyn Ellis, 24 from the Westcoast of Nz, has been travelling around different parts of New Zealand and Australia for the past seven years. We met each other in Melbourne Australia two years ago, fell in love and decided to travel the world together...

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Interestingly enough, before we ever discovered Couchsurfing we were already living it. We currently live in a thirteen bedroom house right in the center of Melbourne. One lounge and kitchen and five bathrooms makes for an easily shared yet very communal living space. We live with people from all over the world, some german,some french, some swedish, some polish, some lebanese, some australian, some finnish, the list goes on and on the longer we stay here. And our home has always been open to all. It was a breath of fresh air to discover people all aound the world have the same notions of opening their homes and their friendship to fellow travellers. It makes the world of difference to arrive somewhere you have never been before and have someone to share a smile and a cold beer with.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

When James first arrived in Melbourne he stayed for three weeks on an old friends couch in Carlton North while sorting out income and permanent accomodation. He recalls talking with his friend about how fantastic it would be for anyone travelling to be able to have someone show them around a new place or city and give them a roof and couch for the time they were there.

Since then we found a book called Sleeping Around by Brian Thacker (who coincedentaly is from Melbourne) and it completly opened our eyes to the official couch surfing experience. This lead to our involvement with accomodating travellers at our house for a fellow travellers introduction to Melbourne.

Our house is not a hostel, but we have a hostel atmosphere and this has helped many travellers find theyr'e way to getting work and generally just having a great experience of melbourne for example; James has secured many jobs for travellers in the cafe he works in.

As well as this we are ever accomodating to friends and family of anyone currently living in our house and as a result many good times and not least good friends have been made through the endeavours of shared experience as a result of the couch surfing concept.
