About Me

CURRENT MISSION

I'm busy studying in Basel, Switzerland for the next two years and doing a bit of traveling around Europe when I get the chance.

ABOUT ME

I've got wide ranging interests and I'm always looking for something new to keep myself busy. I have a habit of jumping from one hobby to the next - at various times I've been involved in Capoeira, canoeing, boxing, ballet, beekeeping, juggling, leather-work, gymnastics and a number of other interests. The things that stay constant are my love for reading - almost anything - and spending time in the company of other people. I'm a particularly easy-going person, I've got a definite silly streak and I'm always keen for an adventure.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I've really enjoyed the experiences I have had couchsurfing and when I actually have a house of my own to live in I'm looking forward to being able to some other surfers.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

One, quite long stay with a very friendly American Peace Corps volunteer in Kilifi Kenya, another extended stay in Rwanda exploring Kigali and going on some trips round the country with a very lovely group of very interesting people and a beautiful stopover at a retreat farm in Stanford, South Africa. I've really enjoyed every one of these experiences and I'm looking forward to more. You can read about some of my travels and have a look at my photographs here: https://minibustaxi.wordpress.com/

Interests

I'm a very curious person - I read a lot and get very excited about new ideas and I'm in a constant search for new experiences. I studied Anthropology, which I find fascinating, and I'm particularly interested in Urban studies and Urban Geography. I could easily see myself becoming an academic.

I enjoy photography, I'm interested in design, antiques, dance, outdoor sports and I love food. New food is one of the few things that excites me as much as new ideas. I have a particular penchant for cheese.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music: Jazz and African music are at the top of my list but I also appreciate Rock and Blues and I'm slowly developing a taste for Hip Hop. Markus Wyatt, Avishai Cohen, The Black Keys, The Doors, Keith Jarret, Simon and Garfunkel, Paul Simon (Graceland might just be my favorite album), Ali Farka Toure, Zim Ngqawana, Bateleur (a South African band I'd definitel recomend), Blitz the Ambassador, Toumani Diabate, Chance the Rapper, Oddisee, Rodriguez, Vulfpeck, The Violent Femmes... That should do.

Books: This is Another list that could get rather long. Here's a few of my favourites: One hundred years of solitude - Gabriel Garcia Marquez, The House Gun - Nadine Gordimer, Working The Room - Geoff Dyer, Black Skin White Masks - Frantz Fanon, The Unbearable LIghtness of Being - Milan Kundera, Heart of Darkness - Joseph Konrad, Catch-22 - Joseph Heller, Portrait with keys, and Exploded View - Ivan Vladislavic, Rozencrants and Guildenstern are Dead - Tom Stoppard ...

Movies: I took a course in film in my first year at university and this introduced me to a whole new world of good films that I had never really considered. Some favorites: Black Cat, White Cat, Withnail and I, Snatch, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Barfly, Master ...

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

A night dive I did in lake Malawi. The air was warm, the water was warm and still, there was a thunder storm on the other side of the lake. Every time lightning struck, everything underwater would be lit up bright white for a split second. We all sat on the bottom with our torches off and watched the dark silhouettes of the fish swimming around us.

Teach, Learn, Share

I really love what I study and I love talking about it so I would happily share information and knowledge about Anthropology and Geography. I can also teach you how to juggle and maybe some basic gymnastics too.

I'd love to learn how to cook new food!
