About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Living the good life

ABOUT ME

I grew up in a smaller east Texas town. My grandparents were always travelers, and I got the travel bug from them. My grandfather actually had a piranha bite off a small chunk of his thumb fishing in South America back in the early 80's. I've been fortunate enough to be able to see some pretty cool things in my life, but I always want more. I love learning foreign languages because they are challenging, but also because I believe the best way to respect someone is to undertake the hardship of learning to communicate with them. I am outgoing, and most people inexplicably find me funny. I make few promises, but I will promise this: if you sit and share a drink with me, I will entertain you, and I will genuinely listen to what you have to say.

I also genuinely enjoy meeting new people, and helping people. I guess that's why I enjoy hosting. Houston is a great city to live in, but it's a terrible place to visit if you're not with a local, since it's spread out. I do my best to show my guests a good time.

PHILOSOPHY

My personal philosophy is that you're attitude directly influences your circumstances, and that karma or whatever similar concept you want to substitute, does exist. Be good to people and they generally will be good to you. Be open minded, but not naive. I also believe that when you stop learning you start dying. The people I've known that have lived the longest and most fulfilling lives never lost their sense of curiosity and wonderment. And to quote a cheesy Jack Johnson lyric "Home is wherever we are if there's love there too."

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I offer a place to crash for the weary traveler. I also like to cook, food is cheap in the US, so I generally try and feed my guests while they're here since I know most of them are on a travel budget.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I hosted theworldbyroad.com crew and had a great time. I partied with them several nights in a row before they left for new mexico. I am looking forward to many more positive experiences. I have hosted a wonderful family from germany, an awesome road warrior from south africa, a cool couple from jersey, a pair of travelling german friends out to explore before starting their careers, a couple who met in istanbul and have a cool story about their wedding, and lot of other short term travelers each of who have been unique and interesting.

Interests

I'm a big movie person, so i watch a lot of movies. I'm also fairly active, and I enjoy fishing, cycling, gardening, weight lifting, and occasionally running. During the summer you will almost always find me near water. I love to travel and try to go somewhere new at least once a year. I love to cook, and that's probably the hobby I spend the most time on. I also enjoy providing legal help to small start up companies and working with entrepreneurs.

Music, Movies, and Books

I love reggae music and country music (which is a strange combination). I listen to pretty much everything though, from the gypsy kings, Ben harper, jack johnson, skrillex, sublime, to buena vista social club, you name it and i probably listen to it. I was a dj through most of college, so I love music. Bookwise:How to Talk Dirty and Influence People - The autobiography of Lenny Bruce, Eaters of the Dead, A Farewell to arms, Citizen Soldiers, Brave New World, Memoirs of Giacomo Girolamo Casanova , Fight Club, Skeleton Crew, Blood Meridian, Dune

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Riding the 1095 from chiang mai to pai on a scooter. It was my first time to ever ride a motor bike, the route is about 150km of mountain roads, so it was scary and awesome at the same time. Catching king salmon in alaska. Drinking wine and engaging in a singalong on the Spanish Steps in Rome. Scuba diving in Belize, Thailand, and Cozumel. I've also had some pretty crazy and dangerous experiences I'll tell you about later.

Teach, Learn, Share

Since my life revolves primarily around the law, fitness, cooking, gardening, and travelling, these are generally the areas I know the most about. I can teach you how to cook a mean thai chicken curry, a good jamaican fish curry, the best eggrolls you will ever eat, and much more. I can also offer legal advice on a wide range of issues pertaining to American law, so if you're traveling and have a legal issue, I'll help you if I can.
