À propos de moi

CURRENT MISSION

Learning all about my Prusa 3D printer, improving my board games and learning to design new things.

I want to find photos of my great grandparents from the Netherlands. I have met some of my cousins in Friesland but no pictures yet. I have been working on finding out information about my family for 15 years and have made several trips to the Netherlands and Germany. I have discovered a great amount of information regarding where they lived, and who my ancestors are as far back as the 1600s. Beyond that the records exist but are not computerized and often in Latin due to the Roman occupation of the area. To further complicate the matter, when you get back that far family names were often taken by the farm you worked on and were spelled phonetically in records. Kobes -- Kobus -- Coobus -- Coobs ... and on and on. My great grandfather on my father's father's side was from Woold just south of Wintersvijk in the province of Gelderland, Netherlands. There is land named Kobus there that dates back to the 1200s. He arrived in the US in 1881 at the age of 12 with his cousin and brother age 14. My Great Grandmother on father's father's side is from Surhuisterveen in the province of Friesland. She was in her early 20s when she arrive in the US with her sister in 1909. They both got married in Muscatine Iowa. My other ancestors are from various parts of East Friesland and North Friesland in Germany.

Pourquoi je suis sur Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Sharing travel ideas and plans. Planning exciting places to go see. Making friends around the world we can someday visit on our future travels, Sharing, creating, trading and eating great and interesting food ideas and recipes from around the world. We love it when surfers bring ideas and food from their culture into our kitchen. Lorene is a chef who writes a blog and cookbooks. CS provides her with inspiration and opportunities to expand beyond what she already knows. Of course the most important thing... making new friends!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE
We are having great fun hosting and traveling! We have made great food, played board games, visited fun events and places. Lets have some fun!

Centres d'intérêt

Playing board games. Loving Wingspan and Scythe lately. One time one of our guests picked out of our game stash a 1962 classic, where we found a camp post card from a child dated 1964. "Camp is great but the food is terrible and so are the camp counselors" What an interesting find! the game was Big Business a Monopoly type game. It was fun and interesting.

Food, almost anything Lorene makes is great, but Bacon Lettuce and Tomato sandwiches are among my favorite! Lorene loves to create things, sings Jazz and makes amazing pickles.

I like to read, Take pictures and mess with most things related to photography, I take pictures of anything that catches my eye. I love plays, art, music Jazz particularly. I am pretty good at Woodworking, I like to search for antiques, especially old bells the bigger the better and ones that had a purpose. I am learning to wood carve and studying timber framing the way the Nordic and Japanese built ancient buildings. I learned more about at the North House Folk School https://northhouse.org/ when I was visiting Grand Marais for our annual Northern Minnesota canoe trip! Timber frames are very cool how they can just be taken apart and put back today in a day. Of course building them is more difficult.

I really enjoyed the book The Egyptian.

Une aventure extraordinaire que j'ai vécue

Travel without reservations in foreign countries. Ok... Ok that is not so amazing, I found my ancestors in the Netherlands that were lost for 100 years after I was told by experts to give up... "some things are just impossible".
