About Me

Kia ora everyone! My name is Jay, and I'm a 29-year-old guy from New Zealand currently living in Valencia, Spain. I'm a friendly, fun-loving person who loves meeting new people and experiencing new cultures!

I'm a big soccer/football fan, and have supported Chelsea since 2006. I also like basketball, cricket and (being a New Zealander) obviously rugby. Other interests of mine include superhero movies, Star Wars, history, geography and of course travel!

I love travelling the world and meeting new people, and if you're keen to let me stay with you, I should let you know that I'm pretty flexible and adaptable with most things.

Finally, don't worry if your English is limited - I can also speak Spanish and Portuguese, so if you can speak any of those languages then we will be fine!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I've always been really interested in the world, and I've discovered that staying with locals allows me to experience the country and culture in a much deeper way than staying at a hostel. I like meeting locals who can share their culture and perspectives with me, and also show me what life is really like in this place.

Music, Movies, and Books

I like listening to pop, rock and electronic music.

I like anything related to superheroes or Star Wars. (Thank you, Disney :D). Also a big fan of historical movies.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Attended two weddings in two different continents in the space of 46 hours…

This how it worked: I went to a friend's wedding in Auckland, New Zealand (my home town) one Saturday afternoon. The ceremony went from 1pm - 2pm, and (as is customary at New Zealand weddings) the other guests and I stayed around for afternoon tea until 3pm.

At 3pm, my dad came and picked me up from the wedding and drove me to the airport, where I jumped on a plan to Montevideo, Uruguay, at 6:30pm to attend another friend's wedding over there. Given that Uruguay is 15-16 hours behind New Zealand, I ended up arriving in Uruguay at 6:30pm on Saturday! (Yes, the same time that had I left New Zealand!). I then attended my other friend's wedding the following day.

Teach, Learn, Share

I'm an experienced English teacher, so I'm happy to help you improve your English and answer any questions you have.

I also LOVE sharing my New Zealand culture with people, so I can teach you the haka, I can show you what makes us different from the other English speakers (i.e the Americans, the British, the Australians) and I can even teach you a few words of the indigenous language, Maori. (Well, the insults anyway!)

What I Can Share with Hosts

See above ^. I can also help pay for your electricity, internet and/or water bills, and even do your grocery shopping for you. In short, if you're happy to host me, I'm happy to return the kindness and do a few favours for you :)
