ABOUT ME

The worst thing that a person can be told is "no, you cannot have it all". By "have it all", I do not mean money, cars and houses -- instead, just give me a chance to be everything that I want to be.

So far, I've proven wrong a number of things. Yes, I can become a professor, while at the same time being a professional jazz musician. Yes, I can learn to scuba dive and explore shipwrecks. Yes, I can start my own business and not be half bad at it (note: I'm not rich... yet).

At the same time, I'm not the intense workaholic people might imagine me to be. I cherish the human connection, conversation over a good bottle of wine, a fine meal (I'll even do the cooking), good music, just good vibes in general.

PHILOSOPHY

Never put beautiful experiences off until tomorrow -- tomorrow may never come.

Just joining in now, but my friends have done it for years...

Música, películas y libros

Too much to list... I love everything Latin-American, Spanish, French. Love jazz. Like *some* rock -- it's called "rock" for a reason, you gotta rock out, not just strum and whine! Intelligently written hip-hop with lyrics that make my heart skip a bit. I also have a weak spot for protest songs of all kinds.

Movies -- Cohen brothers. Fellini. The Matrix. Roman Holiday. North by Northwest. Vicky, Christina, Barcelona. Midnight in Paris... much more

Algo increíble que he hecho

I had a chance to share the stage with a few stars -- The Night Snipers (a very famous Russian rock band), B2 (another Russian rock band), Elvin Jones and Brother Jack McDuff (amazing jazz musicians, unfortunately no longer in this world). Each time it was an inspiration and an amazing learning experience. And I was amazed by their humility and personality off-stage.

Enseña, aprende, comparte

I'm a professor at a university. I can teach you to program in half a dozen languages (Python is my current favorite). I can teach a very drunk person to take an integral in the time it takes to finish a drink, and he (or she) will remember it in the morning. Or, I can just bore you to death with stuff you don't care about.

Or -- I can show you how to play flute, piano or bass guitar, how to play jazz and improvise

Qué puedo ofrecer a los anfitriones

I can cook you the best birria taco outside of Mexico City. Trained by Mama Tita in the little pueblo of Urique in the Copper Canyons. But she didn't trust me to make the tortillas, in her kitchen only she and her daughter made these.
