About Me
CURRENT MISSION
use time wisely, and complete a 20-year project of photographing life around the world.
ABOUT ME
I'm a travel photographer who sometimes covers current events too. I spend several months each year working/traveling overseas. My website, if interested in seeing a little of what I do, is www.joelcarillet.com.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
I enjoy a mix of both hostels and homes when I'm on the road; both are good places to meet people and learn their stories.
However, many of my better experiences with locals have been thanks to couchsurfing. And so for reasons both personal (as a human interested in my global neighbors) and professional (as a global photographer), I'm active on couchsurfing.
COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE
lots over the years, from tiny villages in Papua New Guinea as a teenager to refugee camps in Palestine to a poor Nepalese family who took me in after I'd been robbed. One family in the Middle East saw me walking past their home at dusk and asked if I needed a place to stay. I did and was invited to stay with them in the one room of their house remaining (a recent battle had destroyed the rest of the house). Amazing, generous folks.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
The view of Cairo from the top of the Great Pyramid at 1:00 a.m., and then the view of an Egyptian security office shortly afterwards.
Much better than the Great Pyramid: Walking the Camino de Santiago in 2018.
