Music, Movies, and Books
I read A LOT, so it's a little hard for me to narrow it down. Here are a few: Peter Hessler is my favorite writer; "Rivertown" is his best book so far, I think. "The Cuckoo's Egg" by Clifford Stoll (the true story of one of the first major computer hacker cases), "A Happy Marriage" by Rafael Yglesias (probably the best book I've read about a relationship). "I Capture the Castle" by Dodie Smith. "LA Confidential" by James Ellroy. "Heat" by Bill Buford. I also read cover-to-cover The New Yorker, Saveur, W, Harpers Bazaar and Vogue. I love love love magazines. Longform.org is crack.
Music-wise... At the moment a lot of country -- Dierks Bentley, Brad Paisley and Easton Corbin are at the top of my list. I grew up listening, playing and loving classical music and because of work I listen to a lot of opera.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Meeting Arab writer Sonallah Ibrahim at my bad ass professor's house in Cairo.
The train ride from Helsinki to Seinajoki -- the most beautiful landscape I've ever seen.
Teach, Learn, Share
I can sew and make flowers from different kinds of paper.
