Overview
About Me
My first name is Jean-François. If that's too difficult for you to remember and say, you can call me Jeff. I was born on the 24th of September 1984. Writing those lines in Chicago on the 6th of December 2022, I am 38 years old right now, even though a lot of people think I am younger when they look at me. I try to exercise from time to time and to eat healthy enough. I don't take alcohol, drugs or high sugar foods. I don't smoke either.
I teach web development online, between fifteen and twenty hours a week. I like programming, it allows me to help people better their life and it's quite flexible. I usually try to reduce my workload when I travel.
To know more about me, you can read the rest of my profile and the best references couchsurfers wrote me: they're probably a bit too nice but maybe they'll give a good enough glimpse of the kind of person I am.
If you don't have anything else to do, you can look at my legacy profile to read some random and outdated information about me. I wrote it when I was totally new here, probably back in January 2012. To be honest I changed a bit since then: https://www.couchsurfing.com/users/3897192/profile/legacy
I also wrote another description, giving my opinion on the website after a whole array of couchsurfing experiences but apparently I misplaced it. It was certainly a bit extreme but I kind of liked it, too bad.
If you really like my writing, still don't have enough and need to find some material to help you sleep, you can read my PhD thesis, I wrote it to become a doctor in Computational Mechanics. Hopefully you'll be able to explain it to me. Be warned though it's in French: https://pastel.archives-ouvertes.fr/pastel-00820727/document
I you opened it, please tell me at least what you think about the quotes I carefully selected.
Here is a summarised version I wrote for an international conference: https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1757-899X/33/1/012054/pdf

I don't use it much, but it's a great way to stay in touch.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
When a friend told me about Couchsurfing back in January 2012, I literally had stars in my eyes. I initially thought it's too good to be true so I did some research, created an account and still believe it's too good to be true.
I am on Couchsurfing because it allows me to meet some friendly and open minded people through events, public trips and hangouts. Hosting people is super nice as it gives me the incentive to try and clean my place and the motivation to go out and help them discover the area I'm living in. It also improves my karma. I travel alone most of the time, so I also love surfing to meet great people in order to enjoy my trips much more than in a random Airbnb.

Music, Movies, and Books
Animes : Attack on Titan, Berserk, Case Closed (Meitantei Conan), City Hunter, Code Geass, Cowboy Bebop, Death note, Saint Seiya, Vinland Saga, Yu-Gi-Oh!
I put them in alphabetical order but if I had to mention only one, it's City Hunter without any doubt, obviously in French (you know what I mean if you watched it) and original versions. I still have an old address email related to the manga.
Movies : 12 angry men, Capernaum, Citizen Kane, Gone with the Wind, Icarus, Imitation of life, La vita e bella, Nausicaä of the valley of the wind, Parasite, Zootopia...
Buying the 1001 movies you need to watch before you die book was a great investment. I try to check the new list every year in order to stay up to date.
Music: Darude - Sandstorm for pushups, City Hunter OST the rest of the time: Want your love is the best song ever!
TV shows: 1883, Bosch, Chernobyl, Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones, Spartacus, The Bridge, The Expanse, The Walking Dead, The Wire...
The season 4 of The Expanse made me think about Mass Effect, when I started it, I just couldn't stop watching.
Video games
Mass effect 2, Resident Evil 4, The Witcher 3, Dungeon Master, MegaLoMania, Secret of Mana, Demon's Souls, Baten Kaitos, FF VIII, UFO: Ennemy unknown.
Diablo, The Legend of Zelda: the Wind Waker, GoldenEye, Duke Nukem 3D, Virtua Tennis, Rage, Tales from the Borderlands, Heavy Rain, Warcraft II, Valkyria Chronicles
Sid Meier's Pirates !, Prince of Persia (1989), Deus Ex 3, Donkey Kong Country, Syndicate Wars, Heroes of Might and Magic II, Red Dead Redemption, Dune, Metroid Prime, Skyrim
Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, Fable, Super Mario 64, Alone in the Dark, Gears of Wars, Tomb Raider (2013), Phantasie III: The Wrath of Nikademus, Rick Dangerous, BGE, Lemmings
And many more but I tried to be quite eclectic in the 40 video games I mentionned. I'm a big fan of Demon's souls, so I obviously enjoyed the Dark Souls trilogy, the Surge, the Surge 2, Bloodborne, Nioh, Sekiroh or even Hollow Knight and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.
Some of them aged quite badly. I tried recently Final Fantasy 8 on the Xbox Game Pass and was very disappointed but I remember the feelings it gave me more than twenty years ago and just for that it still deserves to be amongst my all time favourites.
The next games I have to play are Red Dead Redemption 2, Cyberpunk, A Plague Tale: Requiem, Dying Light 2 and Elden Ring. Recently I liked going through Dragon Quest XI, Detroit Become Human, and God of War.
I travel usually with my gaming laptop for work and my Xbox 360 controller and I probably won't be able to decline if you want to play Overcooked 2 or Gears of Wars with me.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
I'm not sure I can really tell you about the extraordinary adventure I lived so I tell you about a few ones I liked:
- Being interviewed by a local channel in Perpignan for the Premiere of Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith while wearing a ridiculous yoda outfit, leaving my car lights on in the meanwhile, failing in my attempt to use the force in order to jump start my car battery and having to use physical strength to come back home.
- Coaching my nephew to help him improve every part of his life. He’ll probably be an astronaut if he continues his progress at the same rate.
- Forgetting to book an accommodation when travelling alone, going at Couchsurfing events with my bag and finding hosts there, Antoine de Maximy style.
- Going back to my flat in Barcelona with my friend Laurent after a club in 2012, realising we didn't have the key and we couldn't contact our other friends, betting with him we could find someone to host us in the city center of Barcelona on a weekday, approaching lots of people in the street and finally having a nap at Marco’s place. I just read the message he wrote me ten years ago after spontaneously hosting us and it really warmed my heart.
- Having more than 10.000 views on a Youtube video on my channel without doing much (I had maximum four videos), but deleting it for reasons I will not expose here.
- Losing my credit card before my trip in Montreal, having my phone stolen in the subway there, but managing to keep my passport. If your PIN code is 0000 and you’re logged in every app, try not to have a picture of your new credit card with the CVV code in your most recent WhatsApp discussion.
- Not being able to decline a single drink offered by my friends for my 35th birthday in Stockholm, meeting a super friendly guy in the bar, going back to his place super far way from the center after I got denied the entrance in another venue, ending up sleeping in his bed and discovering about his sexual orientation when he proposed to massage me in a certain way the following morning.
- Playing the Witcher 3.
- PR19.
- Trying to pick up a top model in the streets of Cannes during the festival while lots of photographers were following and taking pictures of her.
Teach, Learn, Share
I can teach you:
- Coaching. I followed the Linkup Coaching program in Lyon and coached a few people. I liked it but even though I had a Youtube channel a long time ago, I don't like the marketing part of the job. But I still coach a few people from time to time. You can ask me about my definition of coaching or I can even coach you if you show enough dedication.
- Fitness. I followed quite an intense fitness program back in 2019. So if you want tips about nutrition, workout plans or motivation I'll be happy to share with you my limited knowledge and sessions at the gym.
- French: 38 years of experience at the time of writing.
- Mathematics: I have a PhD in Computational Mechanics.
- Playing video games: 30+ years of experience. In one of my furthest memory, I am seven years old and I play rick Dangerous on my Atari ST instead of being in school because I managed to raise the thermometer reading thanks to a hot bulb.
- Programming: 20+ years of experience
- Sports betting arbitrage: I went to Malta a few years ago to implement a strategy. I also wrote a document about it, I can probably try to find it if you ask me nicely.
- Web development: I teach web development since January 2017.
You can teach me Pokemons name in the languages you speak.
I can share with you:
- Drinks
- Healthy meals
- Interesting conversations
- Movies
- Video games
- Visiting nice places
- Walks
- Workouts at the gym or home
