About Me

ABOUT ME

My name is Jecamiah Ybanez. (Like Jeremiah but with a 'c'). I am 28 years old gay male. I am currently in grad school at the Yale School of Drama where I am studying Directing. I grew up in South Texas where I lived through undergrad. After graduation, I moved to Washington, D.C. where I lived for four years working, directing plays, and enjoying life.

I have a pretty wide range of interest. As a theatre-maker, I enjoy art. I enjoy watching dance, theatre, and going to galleries. Living in D.C. cultivated an interest in politics and history. I like learning about new places and discovering them through museums or interactions with local people. I love cooking in my down time. It's a very meditative act for me. I run a lot and enjoy finding new trails.

One of the things I try to do when visiting a new city is wandering the streets and admiring the architecture. I also look for ways into the local culture. Where do people hang out on a Sunday afternoon? What is the food scene like? What are the trails people use for running? What parks are good? What are the interesting and unknown views of the city?

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

My best experiences travelling have always been with locals. Their insight into the local scene has always made for amazing and memorable experiences. Couchsurfing offers a direct access to the local experience of the city and its culture. Being able to discover a city this way enables me to have a much more intimate experience while connecting with other people and forming lasting friendships.

Music, Movies, and Books

Currently, I am reading A LOT of plays (go figure). Aside from that, I am reading Notes on the Assemblage by the poet Juan Felipe Herrera, Radical Hope curated b Carolina De Roberts, Class Matters curated by the New York Times, and Giovanni Bedroom by James Baldwin.

I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Moulin Rouge. Some other movies I have enjoyed lately are Jackie, Dope, or shows like House of Cards, The Newsroom, Big Little Lies, Homeland. I will never pass up an episode of Scandal.

I enjoy EDM music like Sigala, Kygo. I also like more chill stuff like Lianne La Havas, John Legend, Erykah Badu, Ella Eyre to name a few.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I worked on a play in Ashland, Oregon. After it was done my housemate and took an imprompt trip through California. Neither of us had ever been on the West Coast and we really wanted to take advantage of the opportunity. We found a ride down to San Franciso, where we stayed for 4 days, and then flew down to San Diego for a few nights and then took a train along the coast to Los Angeles. It was a great trip we discovered a lot and had a great time meeting new people and explore the food, museums, and nightlife of each city.

Teach, Learn, Share

I am always open to learning new languages, hear new stories about a city or country, or trying new experiences or traditions. I am pretty open and willing to share my own experiences and knowledge.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I am happy to share my experiences. Participate in language exchange or maybe share my love for theatre and art.
