About Me
CURRENT MISSION
To figure out what's next.
ABOUT ME
I'm a graduate student at the University of Minnesota finishing up my PhD work in physics. This has some predicable consequences: I'm an naturalistic person who thinks science is the best way to solve problems. That may sound overly serious, though: I like to leave some of the dorkiness in the lab and try to broaden myself out of the hard science bubble, both academically speaking and just in terms of having a sweet time. I like people who push me and make me uncomfortable, even if it frustrates me at the time. I want to keep traveling and exploring in life rather than letting it get stagnant; but I also appreciate the value of having a home-base community to invest in. I want to find something creative and unusual to do with my education once I'm done with it. I'm a Minnesotan born and bred and as such tend to towards polite and accomodating, but I like to think I challenge people when it's necessary. I'm poltically liberal bordering on socialist but I have trouble committing to movements because my inner scientist is always second-guessing them.
PHILOSOPHY
I suspect I'm fundamentally more lazy and hedonistic than most of the people I spend time with, at least professionally, but I suspect that's because they're graduate students and not really representative. I need other friends to keep me sane. Basically, I want to learn and create half the time, and screw off and have a good time the other half.

Music, Movies, and Books
Books: I tend to read a lot of non-fiction, particuarily things with an academic political bend (just finished books by Nate Silver and Lawrence Lessig). I can get into a little serious fiction but I usually need to have it suggested to me.
Music: Runs towards bluesy, folky, and Minneapolis local. Brass Kings, Trampled by Turtles, Greg Brown are favorites right now. I can also get into a little punk (Le Tigre, Operation Ivy, that kind of thing) and am a bit embarrassed to admit a weakness for Metallica.
Movies: honestly, I've been enjoying tv-series more lately. The Wire, Breaking Bad, and Archer are my current top three.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Getting dragged up a multi-pitch climb in Yosemite by a friend.
Getting off the plane after arriving at McMurdo Station, Antartica.
