About Me

UPDATE: (July 31, 2018) I've updated my status to "Maybe Accepting Guests". The friend that I was helping has been able to move somewhere else, however, I promised to open my doors to some others in the future if they need it. Therefore, any reservations I accept may be subject to change. Thanks.

UPDATE: (May 14, 2018) I'm finished with the apartment fixes but now I have someone staying with me who I'm helping out after some unfortunate series of events. I should be able to resume hosting couchsurfers in mid to late June. Thanks.

UPDATE: I updated my profile on March 12, 2018 to "Not Accepting Guests". I will be Accepting Guests again around May 2018, so make sure you check back. I have some things to do that I have been putting off for too long including fixing some things around the apartment to make my guests stay more pleasant. Thanks.

I have been retired since January 2016 in Cabarete. I am very easy going and just like to spend my days on the lovely Cabarete beach. I am single with no children. I retired in Cabarete because I just enjoy the very laid back atmosphere of the town. It is a small town with an eclectic population of retirees, expats, tourists and locals. Everyone seems to get along very well despite the wide variety of backgrounds. Most days I just seem to enjoy going to the beach and meeting people from everywhere. It's very easy to do here. Some days I enjoy going to the nearby town of Sosua to participate in trivia contests. They are a lot of fun. Sometimes I like to accompany my good Dominican friend Ines to her farm in nearby Sabaneta and help her. She grows pitahaya there. But most days I just like to go to the beach or swim in the pool at my condo.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I am currently renting a very nice two bedroom condo in Cabarete. Even though I live alone I prefer having an extra bedroom to accommodate any of my family members in the United States who wish to visit me on vacation. I have several brothers and nephews who love coming down to stay. However, most of the time the extra bedroom goes vacant. It seems like such a waste of space. That's why I joined couchsurfing to offer the extra space to anyone coming down for a few days to stay. I have no interest in making money from the place. My government pension provides me more than I enough I need to live on. I have to pay the rent regardless of who stays here, so I figure if I can help someone save a few dollars (or euros, pesos, etc.) while they're here, well, why not? And maybe even make some friends while I'm at it!

Teach, Learn, Share

A typical day for me would be waking up about eight or nine, having breakfast, doing chores around the house, going into town to get things down (bank, grocery store, etc.). In the afternoon I usually go to the beach or swim in the pool. Sometimes I like to read or work on my computer. On Thursday afternoons, I almost always go to Sosua, a nearby town, and participate in a trivia contest at a local bar/restaurant. At night I usually spend visiting friends, watching TV, or going into town and eating at a restaurant. I eat out a lot and like to try as many restaurants as I can.

What I Can Share with Hosts

My apartment is very well situated in Cabarete. Everything in town is within walking distance. My apartment is very safe with excellent security. Many Canadians and Europeans come down and stay here for the winter in the apartment complex where I live. They are very nice people and are very easy to get along with. For surfers and kiteboarders, Encuentro Beach and Kite Beach are nearby. There are also other beaches around that are accessible by guagua (the local buses) within an hour or two. Puerto Plata is a large town about 45 minutes away that also has many things to do there. Santiago, the second largest city in the Dominican Republic is located in the mountains about 90 minutes away.
