I watched a lightening strike start a wildfire in California on July 30th 2015. That lightening strike made the entire ground warm to the touch and spread quicker than I could believe. By the next morning we were becoming engulfed by three surrounding complex fires which were spreading more and more every minute. Watching a mountain side burn like a book of matches at night by the river was one of the most surreal moments in my life. By the end of the battle to contain the fires by over 10,000 volunteer firefighters, two of the complexes merged into one and the third missed the place we were living by a few hundred yards. The total burned was 29,000 acres and 35,600 acres surrounding this tiny town. I will never forget how humbling fire can be.
