About Me

Wry, progressive artist-type, surprised to be considered an elder by some.
I co-founded and was the original Artistic Director of American Theater Company (Tulsa, OK,USA) during its glory days. Moved to Norfolk, VA, co-founded another theater company, Serpent Child Ensemble, to do community based art around the US South. Taught adjunctly at 9 or so Institutes of Higher Learning. Tired of scrambling in the dog-eat-dog world of the theater, I returned to my first love, the highly lucrative field of visual art. I have written/illustrated 9 books, as well as illustrating for others.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

1. I'm cheap
2. I'm not poor, but "genteel"
3. I'm considered amiable
4. I prefer couches to the floor, beds to couches, the ground to beds (if it's not too cold)
4.1. Or raining
5. I've heard magical stories from people I respect

Music, Movies, and Books

Most music that involves harmony, intriguing lyrics, virtuosity, story, and a really good hook; Beatles, Lake Street Dive, Cohen, Zappa, Byrne, Dylan
Movies... Cohen Brothers, Spike Lee, "Sorry to Bother You" (best film of 2018), clever comedies
I read all the time. Just finished "Sapiens," also, Shakespeare, LeGuin, Atwood, Chabon, history, historical fiction, historical fiction about artists, good writing, you know...

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Directed the Portuguese premiere of Tennessee Williams, "Camino Real" in Lisbon, with the first integrated (Anglos and Portuguese) cast the little expat theater had seen in it's 75 year history.

Teach, Learn, Share

Teach all kinds of art, art history, art as politics
Learn the same, plus languages, immersion in foreign cultures, both in the States and abroad.
Share fascinating stories about Before You Were Born

What I Can Share with Hosts

I can fix stuff; electrical, plumbing, odd cabinetry.
I know when I can't fix something
A painting or drawing of your place, if you so desire

Countries I’ve Visited

England, France, Japan, Mexico, Norway, Spain
