About Me

Where to begin? I am one of my own favourite subjects and could go on, but I'll keep it short: Work in computer animation, enjoy painting + music. I like questioning things, and try to not be too attached to my beliefs.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I know this isn't terribly original, but I really enjoy meeting people, esp. people from other places with different views, and I have found that people who travel tend to have particularly interesting perspectives. Meeting + conversing with people has been by far my favourite part of travelling (no disrespect to museums etc), and I'm hoping during my home-bound phases, hosting travellers will bring back a little taste of that world.

Interests

Painting (doing and viewing), music (mostly listening, some playing). Recent interest in history. Philosophy of mind, Darwinian evolutionary theory, spiritual/existential theories, technology/artificial intelligence/the future (all these things are related). I also sing low bass in a local community choir on Monday nights.

Music, Movies, and Books

Godel Esher Bach by Douglas Hofstadter -- I read the whole thing, and it changed my life/mind!
The Web of Life by Fritjof Capra -- systems view of nature - again, transformative.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

While planting trees in northern Alberta, I lived for a month in a bush camp a 30 min drive + 25 min helicopter ride from the nearest small town. Also, I lived for 3 months in the middle of the woods on a remote island off the Canadian west coast, in a house built of local cedar around a piano. I guess that's 2 things. I don't only like hermetic experiences, but these were pretty amazing.

Teach, Learn, Share

Teach: Uuh... I think I favour the "Socratic approach", more a question-asker than teacher per se., but I've had plenty of stimulating conversations where I felt everyone learned a something. If your interested, I fancy myself somewhat informed about psychology (more neuro than Freud), transhumanism/futurism and visual arts. I'm from Montreal but have lived + travelled through much of Canada, as well as other parts of the world (esp Europe), so I can share some tips + stories. Also if you're interested in computer animation/CGI/VFX, I've been in that industry since 2003.

Learn: I consider myself a generally curious + inquisitive person, I'm generally interested in whatever you want to talk about. Particularly interested in distinctly non-Canadian perspectives (though fellow Canucks welcome as well).

Share: see below.

What I Can Share with Hosts

A nice home, a respectful host. If you want someone to accompany you to some of Montreal's sites, or wanna have a chill conversation at home, or just need a place to crash, all these are possible. It does depend a bit on my availability, which may be limited especially if I'm in a full-time-work phase (I may not be able to host at all), but drop me a line, hopefully we can work something out!
