About Me

What's happeninnnnn! My name's Jesse! I’m a Californian (from Oakland/Berkeley) that loves to meet other open-minded people and share culture while I travel the world. I’ve done many things in life: started an organic food coop, was briefly a teacher, lived in Guatemala for a year while starting a recycling/composting program at an orphanage, and currently am traveling the world as a digital nomad operating my own small event volunteer coordination company, Shift Happens... Looking forward to meeting you!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

My mom actually told me about Couchsurfing after she surfed in Amsterdam and Paris. I gave it a try when I went on an epic 11 country tour of Europe in the Summer 2015. I met some really awesome people and had some crazy stories and thought I'd give it a try when I got back to California.

Between 2015 and 2017, my roommates and I hosted over 250 guests, many of whom we are proud to now call friends. Hosting has been an unforgettable experience and now I'm excited to give surfing another try.

This quote sums up my approach to Couchsurfing: "A stranger is just a friend you haven't met yet!"

Music, Movies, and Books

Music: house, techno, mellow electronic, funk, house, gangsta rap, some trap, jazz on occasion... honestly, always open to new music

Movies: The Departed, Memento, Anchorman, anything by Scorsese or Tarantino

Books: Ishmael, The Autobiography of Malcolm X, Omnivore's Dilemma, Walden by Thoreau, Noam Chomsky books, Loafer’s Manifesto, anything by Malcolm Gladwell

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I guessed the distance to Maui midway through a flight to Hawaii from San Francisco when I was 7 and won a bottle of champagne.

I missed the week before exams my sophomore year (2014) to go to the International Permaculture Conference in Habana, Cuba

I started a student-led food cooperative that served plant-based meals made with locally sourced ingredients that transitioned into an organic produce box subscription program while I was in college

I saved a woman's life once while I was summiting Mt. Shasta in Northern California

I touched a bull during the Run of the Bulls in Pamplona

I sailed the Greek Islands with a skipper I met through Couchsurfing

Spent a year starting an environmental program (composting, recycling and environmental education) at an orphanage in Guatemala

Teach, Learn, Share

Life is constantly about learning and is a big reason why I do Couchsurfing: to learn about other cultures and ways of living through connecting with others and seeing the world from their perspective.

As for sharing, I'd love to cook a meal with you (and can buy ingredients) and buy rounds of beers to drink together. Of course I can also share experiences and whenever I'm settled will open my home up to friends and travelers!
