About Me

I am fun gal with a lot of quirks. I like to think that I'm exploring the world city by city, village by village, to seek out new experiences and friends to help broaden my world view. I love change and walking into the unknown.

I grew up in a small town in rural in Ontario, Canada. Despite having parents from different backgrounds (Irish & Indian), I did not really have much access to different cultures. My first big experience with new cultures didn't happen until I was 16 and I moved to France for a student exchange program. After that, I was hooked. I caught the 'travel bug' and have been looking for new opportunities to adventure ever since.

I went on to study Sociology and Legal Studies for my Bachelors and did a Masters in Criminology. But when I finished, I did not feel ready to settle into adult life in Canada. So, instead, my partner (Michael) and I choose to move abroad. For the last year, we have been working as English teachers at a university in Zhengzhou, Henan, China. We're now back in Canada to study (yay school!) and explore Quebec in our free time.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I am on CS because I want to know more about different cultures and people. Hostels are great for meeting new people but they don't always help you to gain an understanding of the place where you are traveling.

Interests

I'm interested in new experiences. I'm horribly uncoordinated but will attempt most things at least once! I love anything that challenges me creatively - whether it's a lively conversation or learning a new form of art. My friends often joke about the strange hobbies that I pick up for a couple months at a time. I'm currently preoccupying myself with carving stamps and overseeing an international book club (but I will probably find something new to get excited about in the next couple weeks and this will change).

Music, Movies, and Books

MUSIC - This is always the most difficult to answer...I love dancing and have taught dance classes for several years. So my main criteria for music is whether I can dance to it. I will happily listen to anything that makes me want to move.

BOOKS - I recently bought an e-reader and have rediscovered my passion for reading. I tend to prefer fiction over fact because I like the escape that reading provides. I recently finished reading Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist and am now re-reading Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird so that I can read Go Set a Watchmen properly... If that gives to any sense of my taste in novels...
Also, I treat Harry Potter books as a form of comfort blanket on rainy days.

TV - Game of Thrones, Sherlock, Silicon Valley, 30 Rock, and (of course) Friends...

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Crash landed in a hot air balloon: fought off an angry monkey with my purse; swam with giant sea turtles; stood within a couple feet of a wild orangutan
