About Me

CURRENT MISSION
Learning that "All who wander are not lost"

ABOUT US
Sally (my spouse) and I spend much of the year traveling, exploring, and learning new things in new cultures. We love people, travel, and new things. I am honest, open, like to listen, outgoing, friendly, and love to cook. Sally is the first to get up to do the dishes and is always looking for ways to help as long as it does not involve cooking. I am curious about everything and have a zest for learning that never ends. I have spent most of my life as a biologist, conservationist, and university faculty and administrator. I read voraciously and love learning about new places and people. I laugh quickly and see the brightest side of life... Currently, we are both graduate faculty (www.western.edu/MEM) and I am the global coordinator for an Environmental Management program in Colorado, USA.

PHILOSOPHY
Learn with humility and where possible, give with grace...

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING
Fully with fun and humor. We seek hosts that can help us understand new places and cultures. Our most memorable travel experiences are with homestays or local hosts that can help us gain a deeper understanding of their culture and country.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE
We have only surfed a few times, generally as we are entering into a new culture or place and find hosts that might enjoy sharing travel stories and experiences.

Interests

We are engaged by people and new ideas and experiences. We love to travel. At home in Colorado, when we are not teaching or doing field trips with our students, you could find us at a locals farmers market, play, or event. We love the outdoors and camp, hike and fish in Colorado. As we travel, we are curious about everything with a special love for food, local culture, understanding both contemporary issues and the history of place. While we tend toward seeking places of natural beauty, we are also drawn to great cities and ancient sites.

Music, Movies, and Books

Love movies of all kinds, read voraciously, especially science fiction, very eclectic music taste (Neil Diamond to Metallica etc.).

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

We could never pick only one. We have been humbled by the Himalayas, graced by Indonesian muslim hosts during Ramadan, listened in awe to the power of the Perito Moreno Glacier, pondered our existence while staring at the Milky Way from mountain tops in Chile, ate tarantulas in Cambodia and living sea urchins in the Philippines, hugged abused and rescued Spider Monkey's in Bolvia, and listened to monks in Tibet argue philosophy. We know we are two of the luckiest people on the planet.

Teach, Learn, Share

We have more to learn than share, but we have some great stories of our travels and life, I love to cook, especially with others. Sally is quieter but has great depth and a child's openness to novelty and learning. My field is animal behavior so I often have animal stories to share, including those from the most bizarre species of all... H. sapiens.

What I Can Share with Hosts

A sense of adventure, love of travel, and an appreciation for their lives and journey. I would love to help prepare a meal, bring food or wine to the table, and share stories. If our hosts are curious, we often have stories at a blog www.jsoutofbounds.blogspot.com to share as well.
