About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Tour the Guianas, lighting the world on fire with my smile and handy pack of matches.

ABOUT ME

I have a remote job. I like sunshine and bike rides. Remove the articles from the previous sentences and replace "I" with "ROB" and you will know almost exactly how I don't talk in real life.

I more or less always smell pleasant, but nobody has a perfect record.

I'm a xenophile.

I hosted a travel show for 4 seasons in Vietnam, Japan, Korea and Turkey: https://www.youtube.com/user/JetSetZero

PHILOSOPHY

I have a little bit of a communist streak when I'm traveling. Everything is easier if we just help each other out.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I host most of the time and have only surfed (as of the time this goes to print) 5 times. Those 5 times were awesome. The times I've hosted have generally been awesome too.

I recently gave a toast in Delhi at the wedding of one my former CS hosts. It reminded me how amazing CS is/was and inspired me to get back into it.

I appreciate how time-consuming making CS messages can be, and don't mind form emails as much as some seem to.

I go to potlucks and language exchanges and have many friends that also CS.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I don't surf too much for some reason, but when I do I always have a great time. I've hosted quite a bit, met for coffees, beers, shown people around.

Man, you should really never fill these things out at 7am. It makes you sound like Ben Stein.

Interests

I want to master all of man's modes of transportation. Like horses, donkeys, camels, ostriches, driving, flying, motorcycles... so on.

So far, favorites are the ostrich and the motorcycle. After all, the ostrich is really the motorbike of the pack-animal world.

Music, Movies, and Books

Mar Adentro, Espiritu de la Colmena, There Will Be Blood, westerns; Dwight Yoakam, Steve Aoki, Antoine Dufour; A Confederacy of Dunces, Ender's Game, Hamlet.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Negotiated passage to Zambia with Zimbabwean Interpol without fuel, food or money, only to break down in the mountains in a Zambian lion reserve-- talked a Mozambican trucker into towing the van with a constantly shortening rope through the police checkpoints, only to break down outside a Chinese casino in Lusaka in front of a very nice man with a very big gun.

I guess the amazing thing is that I'm alive and not in Zimbabwean prison.

Teach, Learn, Share

I can be selfish about wanting to learn from those that stop by. An interaction with someone is a wasted opportunity if all you do is talk about yourself and what you know.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I can show you how to escape from a locked box at the bottom of a river, just like David Copperfield. It works most of the time.

Countries I’ve Visited

Andorra, Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Bolivia, Botswana, Brazil, Bulgaria, Cabo Verde, Canada, Colombia, Comoros, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, Estonia, Ethiopia, Faroe Islands, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Guyana, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lesotho, Lithuania, Malaysia, Mexico, Moldova, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Netherlands, Norway, Paraguay, Peru, Poland, Portugal, San Marino, Sao Tome and Principe, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Suriname, Swaziland, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine, Vatican City State, Viet Nam, Zambia, Zimbabwe
