ABOUT ME

I enjoy traveling because I like being surprised -- even if being surprised means waiting for a delayed train, or getting lost in a new city, or eating something different from what I thought I'd ordered. I like traveling without professional tour guides telling me what I am supposed to look at. I prefer chance encounters with strangers who would share tips and directions with me -- out of generosity, perhaps, or out of a genuine pride of the place where they live. I like walking around at a slow and easy pace. I prefer trains over planes. If it's close enough, I would rather walk than take the bus. I genuinely like talking about the weather, because the weather is different in different places, and the weather affects us all.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

In 2011, I swam with whale sharks in Donsol, the Bicol region of the Philippines. The whale sharks were huge: the biggest was the size of a two buses! It was AMAZING!

I used to be a teacher, but I am at this point in my life when I feel like I don't really KNOW anything. But maybe that's a kind of knowledge: to know that you don't know. Right?
