Couchsurfing works.
I had only great experiences so far, and I don't think it's different with other couchsurfers. As long as you have the spirit, Couchsurfing does work.
In fact it's a matter of feeling. If you are being hosted you must figure out which are the limits of your host and follow the house's rules. If you are the host, you must realize that your guest is, well, your guest and you're supposed to treat him as such. If both (host and guest) find themselves in this balance, the result can be no other than a positive experience in the end.
