About Me

CURRENT MISSION

to see more of the world, and its people... people, not just places.

ABOUT ME

I'm from a very small town in the middle of rural Maine, farm country. Lots of cows, not a huge change in scenery or opinions for miles and miles. It was a beautiful, safe, loving environment to be young in, but I have done my growing up in college, studying abroad in Paris for a semester, and now having graduated I am continuing to grow and develop while living in Jamaica Plain, Boston.

PHILOSOPHY

I believe that the universe is giving, and if you are open to it, you shall receive it's bounty.

I prefer to think of the big picture. I think of everything in relation to how it fits into the big picture.

"life is a series of collisions with the future; it is not the sum of what we have been, but what we yearn to be." ~Jose Ortega y Gasset

"the pessimist complains about the wind, the opptimist expects it to change, the realist adjusts the sails" ~Ward

"if your eyes are blinded with your worries, you cannot see the beauty of the sunset" ~Krishnamurti

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Unfortunately I do not have a couch to offer in Boston as I am subletting and my roommates are very private people, so I participate by surfing, meeting for coffee or lunch, and spreading the word.

I love this idea of opening my space and home to other travelers, because I believe in the way traveling used to be, when travelers were taken in and given hospitality out of respect for their pilgrimage. Couch surfing seems to be a modernization of this very idea, a way for travelers to connect amongst one another and take care of each other. It is a beautiful concept to me, and though I cannot offer up a couch of my own right now, I look forward to the day where I can. Until then I will participate in the CS Project by being a traveler, bringing with me stories and good company to the individuals who are kind enough to take me in.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I had the most amazing first couchsurfing experience in Venice. It was during Carnivale, so it was a miracle that my friend and I were able to find a person willing to host the two of us, especially during the holiday. Our experience was completely enriched by the personality, generosity, and kindness of our host, and I can't imagine Carnivale any other way.

Music, Movies, and Books

MUSIC: I LOVE MUSIC. If I had to chose a favorite, it would be Explosions in the Sky.
In short: I'm a shoegazer.

MOVIES: Inception, The Fountain, Requiem for a Dream, Casablanca, Roman Holiday, V for Vendetta, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, (500) Days of Summer

BOOKS: I love books. I'm an English Lit major, enough said.
Some favorites: If on a winter's night a traveler, Slaughterhouse-Five, Jane Eyre, A Wrinkle in Time, The Ugly American, The Things They Carried, The Old Man and the Sea, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, A Midsummer Night's Dream, How to Read Literature Like a Professor, Harry Potter, The Great Gatsby, Ender's Game, Blindness, The Catcher in the Rye

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Skydiving. The most amazing thing I have done bar none, followed by acting on stage, which is also amazing in a different way.

Skydiving was the ultimate way of letting go of one's self... one's fear, one's physical existence... and just being for 60 seconds of free fall... and then the view from the parachute was breathtaking too... and the incomparable quiet of floating high about the world... especially after hearing the rush of your falling.

Being on stage is like letting go of who you are and not just simply being, but reinventing, morphing, and changing. You can develop your character, and when you perform it you show the world the work you have done. If they cannot see an ounce of you in it, you have done well, but I often find that after working so long with a character I have found a piece of it that I want to keep, and it becomes a part of me, too.

Skydiving, Acting... the amazing things I have done in my lifetime.

Oh, and coming to live in a foreign country... that one makes the list, too.

Teach, Learn, Share

Travel should not be about seeing "the sites" and snapping a couple hundred photos... but about interacting and learning.

I am learning more and more about wine every day I am in France, a few of my family members are in the business and they have taught me some things about wine as well. I am in an all female acting company that performs Shakespearean plays- I know how to dress and make myself up (rather convincingly) walk, talk, and sit like a man. I know how to develop film and print photos (just in case you have a darkroom hanging around). I do yoga, and would be very willing to teach anyone some positions or a great basic routine.

I would love to learn how to: cook any and all types of cuisine (I'll do the dishes/clean up after!), ride a Vespa, operate a sail boat, tie a super strong knot, juggle, use a pogo stick.
