About Me

I am a social and laid back guy who loves making audacious travel plans over coffees, hosting parties, organising events...basically anything that involves giving people the opportunity to enjoy themselves. I've lived in Scotland, Sweden for a year and now in Newark, New Jersey, USA working in a neurosience lab over here! Try to experience my fair share of culture but can also appreciate a night in front of the tv with a takeaway.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

A few reasons really. Firstly I love meeting new people from around the world and being able to show them about (or if I'm busy give them advice on what to do/where to go). I enjoy sharing travelling experiences with people who like myself need to get away every so often. Coming up I have some interviews for PhD positions in Lausanne and Strasbourg and would love to meet some locals. And lastly, this idea and community is a great idea.

Interests

I'm incredibly passionate about my studies. Neuroscience is what I want to do with my life with a particular focus on stress, mood, emotion, reward system and addiction...I will happily try to unpick the jargon for anyone interested.I have a love of organising big events born out of doing fundraisers for Amnesty. I don't tend to shy away from political discussion and like to keep abreast of current social issues. Playing, watching and chatting about football is something I can do for ages if given the chance but I'm used to being in situations/friend groups where it's not a possibility. I also enjoy cycling everywhere and of course travelling. Love cooking Indian curries and make a mean chilli too

Music, Movies, and Books

Music: Bit of an eclectic mix of electro, reggae, afrobeat, folk and hip hop. First love was Basement Jaxx

Movies: Bourne films, anything by Pedro Almadovar, Trainspotting, Amelie, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away...many more I can't think of

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

On a 3 month expedition in Tobago doing sea turtle conservation and frog research (yes...it was the life) I discovered an almost lifeless juvenile turtle washed up on the beach. We took it back to our accommodation and proceeded to look after it over the next 10 weeks (it lived in the shower) whilst the authorities dallyed over taking it to Trinidad for proper rehabilitation. They eventually did and now it is all well but without our groups intervention it wouldn't have survived!

p.s. Turtles piss all over you and bite you when you try to feed them

Teach, Learn, Share

I'm happy to pass on any of the knowledge I have accumulated in the past 23 years. I have studied Neuroscience and also Sociology and have travelled to far flung places. Brain-gut-axis, Scottish cultural norms and slang words, local knowledge of what to do, how to get yourself addicted to playing pool...if I know it i'm happy to divulge and equally I love learning new things!

What I Can Share with Hosts

I can cook fairly well (always better at cooking for a group than myself) and love making curries
