About Me

Hi there! My name's Joe, pleased to meet you! I am 22 years old and am currently studying to be a Ship's Officer in the United States Merchant Navy (kind of like Tom Hanks in the movie "Captain Phillips"). I have a lot of different interests, but above all, I love to travel and meet new people. I look forward to getting to know you, please feel free to reach out and ask any questions you may have!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Although I am a full-time student back home, I have been fortunate enough to travel quite a bit while at school. My favorite part about traveling is meeting people and trying to have an authentic experience while overseas. I believe that the more people you meet, the more open-minded you become; what better way to meet people and travel than by Couchsurfing? I want to Couchsurf so that I can experience locations and places as they are experienced by the people that live there, and to also bring a part of New York to any hosts that may host me.

Interests

I'm open to all different types of interests! When I'm not out and about, I'm a bit of a bookworm, and have my fair share of experience with video games and nerdy stuff. Don't even get me started on music, I'll totally talk your ear off about the bands I like. I'm also a huge history buff and would love to learn about the history of your home, assuming you'd want to talk about it that is! Otherwise I'm down for anything.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Off the coast of the Azores, I saw the sunrise with Mt. Pico obscured by sea fog. Everything had this primordial orange glow to it, and it was hard to tell where the ocean ended and the mountain began. Very, very moving.

Teach, Learn, Share

I could teach you:
How to play an instrument (Guitar, Bass Guitar, Drums, or Ukulele)
All about different nautical sciences (like using the stars to find your position on Earth!)
How to talk like a New Yorker ("I'm WALKIN HERE")
How to make "Fried Oreos" (trust me, they're good)
How to "two-step" to punk rock (or ska for that matter)
Different knots and nautical stuff that could help you out if you are ever on a boat

I'm down to learn anything, but I'd like to learn:
About your country's history and customs
How to play a traditional instrument from your country
Where the best restaurants are where you live!
How to drive a boat (I'm trying to practice as much as I can!)
You can teach me anything you want though, I'm open for pretty much anything!

I can share:
My "sea stories", or stories I have from my time as a sailor
Some insight as to what it's like to be an American
The best places to go if you're ever in the New York City area
My musical instruments if you'd like to try them
Waaaaaaay too many books
An open mind and a willingness to help if needed
A good time, regardless if you want to party or not!

What I Can Share with Hosts

If you accept me as a guest in your home, I would be more than happy to share any of my "sea stories" with you; some of them might be a bit raunchy, but they're pretty much guaranteed to be interesting! I'd also be happy to try and teach you how to play an instrument. I'd even be happy to try and teach you how to speak better English if you'd like! Finally, I can do my best to cook some American-style food, although I'm an average cook at best.
