About Me

I'm an Australian guy riding my motorbike from Sydney to London.

I'm a social, resourceful, open minded guy with a good sense of humour, and I love adventures where something goes wrong because that's where the best stories and memories come from. I like to do all my own mechanical work and am pretty handy with modifying both the bike and my gear to suit my needs.

In my normal life I was a town planner for a company that builds mobile phone towers. I like watching documentaries and listening to podcasts, music that makes me grin like an idiot or that gives me goosebumps and squeezes my heart, and riding with my helmet open and the weather all up in my face.

After 5 years in Sydney I'm finally getting out for one last big adventure before my life gets too serious. I discovered motorcycling in early 2015 and have been into the biking lifestyle, the weekend escapes and regular camping trips ever since.

The general route is very vague. From Sydney to Darwin, I'll ship the bike and fly myself to East Timor, then island hop through Timor, Indonesia, Malaysia. Overland through Thailand and maybe Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos (depending on my budget by then). I'll probably cross Myanmar with other travelers so we can split the cost of the government escort. Then through northern India, Nepal and the Himalayas. After that it gets tricky with visas and immigration issues; I'll make it up as I do along.

I have some old CS friends in Germany, and mates in the UK, so I'll ride around for as long as my money lasts before flying back to Australia with the bike.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

On my trip I'll be camping as much as possible, because I love it, but also because I'll be travelling on a modest budget. Sometimes it won't be possible to do that, though, and also I want to experience reach country I visit from the inside. That's why I'm on Couchsurfing.

I used to be on CS as both a traveller and as a host, and my favourite part of it is the new friendships I made with people from all over the world. In my last job I worked with Australians, Africans, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Vietnamese, Israelis... I love talking to them about their countries and lifestyles and can't wait to do that when I'm on the road.

Interests

I watch a lot of documentaries about science, nature, geography, ancient history, economics and engineering. Sometimes politics, but generally I try not to discuss that topic until I know someone a bit better.

Sometimes I write poems and short stories, though not as often as I'd like to.

I want to live life as hard as I can while I'm young. By the time I finish with this trip, I want to look back on it and think "I can't believe I survived that".

Music, Movies, and Books

Australian hip hop. People laugh but it's a thing, and it gives me a strong feeling if belonging to my culture.

Podcasts about history, economics, science, and most topics except for true crime - I don't like hearing about horrible murders.

Books about travelling without plans or money. I've also read about 20 Wilbur Smith novels and love the adventures that his characters go on.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Travelled around Europe with Couchsurfing; once on my own, and again with a partner.

Teach, Learn, Share

I can teach you the basics of motorcycle maintenance, as I'll be doing it a lot!

I'd love to discuss big and small issues with you, especially if you've got a perspective that makes me see the world differently.

What I Can Share with Hosts

Good conversation, an acceptable standard of cooking, motorcycle maintenance and modification tips.

Countries I’ve Visited

Austria, Cambodia, France, Hungary, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain, Thailand, United Kingdom, United States, Viet Nam

Countries I’ve Lived In
