Some General Guidelines for couchsurfers:
1) If you are new to couchsurfing and have 0 references, put in some extra effort to show that you are someone we can trust - link to facebook/myspace - tell us who you are, - and make sure your profile is complete and filled out.

2)No piggybacking aka the phenomenon of my friends aren't couchsurfers but they're coming along with me - if you're bringing friends they need to have a profile and be accountable for themselves. Whenever someone's been a terrible guest, it's usually b/c they had zero accountability - either brand new to the project or not having a profile.

2) The Request
http://www.couchsurfing.org/wiki/How_to_write_a_CouchRequest
Address me by my name, talk about some of the things in my profile to show you have read it. Put some effort in. It's blatantly obvious when people send generic form requests out to a bunch of people. When you live in a big city, sometimes you get 10+ requests a day, and if your message reads like spam, it'll probably be treated as such. While I understand that you may be busy and not have the time to read my profile or put effort into requests, I am also a busy guy and give people back what they give to me.

3) We tend to get an overwhelming number of cs requests and can't always accomodate. If you want to find a place to stay in DC, I suggest also searching for couches in arlington, fairfax, and alexandria, va, and also bethesda, and silver spring maryland.

4)If I agree to let you stay with me, I will usually double confirm a few days prior to make sure that you really are coming. If you aren't going to come, please give me at least 24 hours notice. I understand it's hard to communicate sometimes when traveling, but one of the worst things in life is to wait somewhere (in some cases 6+ hours) for a couchsurfer, worry about them, make multiple efforts to contact them, and turn down offers to go party with friends, only to find that the couchsurfer decided to go somewhere/ do something else on a whim and say, "whoops- I forgot to call you."

5)If you end up staying with us, please understand that we all live in a community here - here's some general guidelines -

1. If you open it, CLOSE IT.
2. If you turn it on, TURN IT OFF.
3. If you unlock it, LOCK IT.
4. If you break it, FIX IT.
5. If you can't fix it, CALL SOMEONE WHO CAN.
6. If you borrow it, RETURN IT.
7. If you use it, TAKE CARE OF IT
8. If you make a mess, CLEAN IT UP.
9. If you move it, PUT IT BACK.
10. If it belongs to someone else, GET PERMISSION TO USE IT.
12. If you don't know how to operate it, READ THE DIRECTIONS or DON'T MESS WITH IT.
13. If it doesn't concern you, DON'T MESS WITH IT.

Along this line of thinking, keep in mind that this is a community, and couchsurfing is about *exchange*.

Our place is not merely a roof - I want to get a chance to meet you, talk with you, learn from you and I've found it's hard to do that when people are only looking for a place to crash.

We share a lot with each other and our guests.
Please don't take advantage of our hospitality, aka crossing that fine line that separates a guest from a freeloader.

Bring something to the table yourself and we can all learn and grow together.

Note - most of these guidelines came about *after* bad situations.

PHILOSOPHY

Joseph Campbell: People say that what we're all seeking is a meaning for life. I think that what we're seeking is an experience of being alive, so that our life experiences on the purely physical plane will have resonances within our own innermost being and reality, so that we actually feel the rapture of being alive.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

My friend TR initially recommended it to me. He was trying to convince me to come visit him and I was whining about the cost of lodging along the way(interestingly enough, he never joined, but I did!). Anyways, I joined in June 2007, and haven't looked back since. I've hosted, surfed, gone to meet-ups, and been part of the cs camp @ burning man.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I have both hosted, and surfed, more times than I can count. I have done a lot more hosting than surfing. Rather than detailing every single one of those situations, I'll let you read the references. I also really enjoy the community aspect of Couchsurfing and meeting/making friends. I like to organize/participate in community events.

Music, Movies, and Books

The Hero with a Thousand Faces / Power of Myth (I'm a big Joseph Campbell fan)

Recently, I've become a manga fan - I haven't gotten so intense as to dress up in cosplay yet, but I have become a super huge fan of One Piece, with a sprinkling of Naruto and Bleach.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I was climbing up a rockface once, and there was a root/vine jutting outwards, I thought to grab it as a means to stabilize myself, and it turned out to be a snake! ruh roh...

Teach, Learn, Share

Here are some methodically researched facts:

Almonds are very high in monounsaturated fats (the fats that are good for your heart).

Light is necessary in order to maintain a sense of time - one way to combat jet lag is to shine lights on the back of the blood vessels behind your knees to trick your body regarding what time it is.

The difference between a smile and a fake grin is in the eyes - check for the crinkle at the edge to see if a smile is genuine or not.

When you get an eerie feeling in a place and get spooked, it's most likely due to low frequency sound waves - in fact, there's a mythical note, which when played, causes people to defecate. The US military is spending hundreds of millions of dollars in research to find this note and thus create the ultimate "non-lethal" weapon.
