About Me

I still remember the massive 300 steps I had to climb to see the grotto when I first traveled to Baguio in the Philippines. It was massive then because I was a tiny 4 year-old. These steps are worth the hike because of the sense of accomplishment you get once you see the breathtaking views ahead of you. (Like I was 4. Pretty sure all I cared about then was candy but we'll pretend it happened two days ago)

Anyway, hi, I am John. I was born in the Philippines, grew up there, lived in a farm, learned how to live on the streets, and eventually moved to Canada on a very random day. My mom was just like "Yo, pack up we gon' move to Canada" and I was hella confused. I thought Canada was like a neighborhood 5 kilometers away "Canada Villas -- where rent is cheaper but flood is higher". Since then, everything in my life has changed. (My body froze in Canada until it sank in the lakes ['cause we ain't got sea in Winnipeg] like Leo Dicaprio)

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

The reason why I am on Couchsurfing at first was that I wanted to try it. One of my friends recommended it when I was traveling in Europe and I am quite glad that he did. The reason why I am still here is that I have made life-lasting friends from using this platform. I did not expect my hosts to become one of the best people I know, one of my best friends, and one of the reasons I would be coming back to Europe to. I always like to expand my social network 'cause not only that it gives me a whole new group of friends, but it broadens my understanding of different people, culture, and environment.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I gave my first paycheck to my two grandmas whom helped my mother raise me. They're awesome!

Teach, Learn, Share

One of my favourite experiences was when I stayed in Italy with an Italian friend I met in Copenhagen. It just so happened that he was back in Italy when I was traveling there so, he offered me a place to stay. His family was the nicest. Though, his parents did not speak English or had a hard time understanding it, we got along really well. I took time to learn a few common sentences or sayings in Italian so I could speak to his parents at least in a short amount of time. Though, sometimes, especially when we had dinner, he served as the translator which we all found quite funny and impressive. I also became more open to a different culture. In what way? The best example I can give is at the dinner table. They always served wine and bread along with other courses in the evening and this is not something I am used to. Since, I always tend to eat rice and some sort of protein like chicken breast. Always. I was not open to drinking wine at first every night but, I did it anyway because I wanted to be a part of the family. In that way, they opened my mind and broadened my sense of acceptance. And I became alcoholic. Jk I already was.
