ABOUT ME

I grew up in Alaska and recently finished school there in Anchorage. I have always known that after college I would travel around the world and deepen my understanding of who I am, and what other kinds of people and perspectives are out there. I love to cook, make music, and ride my bicycle. My last trip was a bicycle ride down the Pacific Coast of America and rode about 900 miles over the summer 2010. After that trip I came to Park City, Utah and have been a nanny here for the last few months saving money for a trip to Europe which starts in March. I could not be more excited for my first trip outside the U.S. I am really hoping to use this website to meet lots of people and grow physically, mentally, and spiritually through my experiences and adventures.

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Being a part of this community is to me, to be a part of someones life for a day or two. I am not just a traveler looking for a free place to stay, but looking for an opportunity to immerse myslef in the culture and community of wherever I am. To go beyond the safe and easy hotel rooms, and open myself to learn about people and truly be here, to be present in the now. To take my desire to see the world and make it real.

To prepare myself for Europe I have been reading a bunch of outdated textbooks and tour guides that I have found at thrift stores, along with some classics like Dickens and Hugo. But right now I am in the middle of another Tom Robbins book, which is my fifth this year. Really enjoyed Twains book Innocent's Abroad which got me really excited for this trip.

I like to think I have had many amazing moments, and in fact I feel lucky to be alive sometimes. But perhaps the greatest was being poked in the back my an Alaskan Grizzly bear last summer while I was in my tent scared to death. It was perhaps the most terrified I have ever been as I listened to it walk around my tent many times smelling me, and as it nudged me with it's nose. I will always remember that night in Cordova, AK as I camped near Childs Glacier on the Copper River.

Growing up in Alaska really taught me about enjoying the outdoors and being in nature. I can confidentally say that being happy when camping usually means that you are dry, so thats a big lesson that I have learned. But I have lots of small things I do to keep my happy, and if you have any questions about camping, hiking, or fishing I would love to try to answer them. I also learned a lot about touring on a bicycle this summer and built my own panniers out of buckets which worked amazingly, and would love to share my knowledge or swap stories about that.
