About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Change the system

ABOUT ME

I'm a math teacher at a local state-operated psychiatric hospital for kids. I'm part of a group working on starting a cohousing development in Richmond. My wife is a former librarian and teacher, a great cook, a former server and caterer, and she loves to host. We've both been involved as activists in city politics and the community, and we've stayed at intentional communities. We are currently involved in a weekly potluck gathering called Richmond Eats Richmond and in a group bringing cohousing to Richmond. Our neighborhood is an interesting hotbed of bicyclists, gardeners, renewable energy adopters, and an increasing number of participants in Richmond's Occupy movement.

PHILOSOPHY

Love, be loved, do cool shit.

Music, Movies, and Books

Anything we can see at the Byrd, our local $2 2nd run movie theater -- my wife likes to read mysteries, I tend toward science fiction. I've also been influenced by Affluenza, The Post-Corporate World (David Korten), Generations and The Fourth Turning (Strauss and Howe), The Algebra Project (Robert Moses), Guns, Germs and Steel, and The Urban Homesteader to name a few.

My wife has what she calls popular tastes in music and also enjoys the bluegrass and roots blocks on WRIR 97.3, our local community-supported radio station. I tend more toward techno, rap, some hip-hop (though mostly not what my students listen to). I've recently been listening to Armin van Buuren, Eminem, the Roots, Youssou N'Dour, Nenah Cherry, Nelly Furtado, and Natasha Bedingfield

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I traveled with a group of students through Italy, starting in the hometown of a colleague. We both have stayed in beautiful intentional communities (or communes, as they we called back in the day) in rural Virginia and urban New York City
