About Me

I was born in Hong Kong, migrated to Australia when I was young (a typical Hong Konger story - feel free to ask me more). I grew up and worked in Sydney before starting to travel to bits of the world, mainly through work trips. I've since lived and worked in Beijing and Hong Kong, both very wonderful places with their own distinct quirks.

I used to work in a cushy corporate job as a financial controller in one of the Big 5 Tech Giants. But I don't want to spend the rest of my life in an office, so I left my job in 2018 to do some soul searching. Nowadays, I'm a part time tour guide showing visitors a deeper layer of Hong Kong that most tourists don't see. It's so much cooler to interact with different travellers and telling them interesting stories about my hometown. The other half of my time I'm trying to find my passion. Cliche but I'm not having much success so far.

Personality wise, I'm rather tame and cheerful. Growing up in a fairly typical Asian family, I am pretty obedient and have gotten good grades haha. I'm a deep thinker and like to ponder on philosophical topics. I don't drink because I've got Asian genes that will make me fall asleep even if I take a sip of beer. And one more thing... People can't usually tell, but I fancy guys, not girls.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

A friend is recommending me to try this instead of going to hostels.
I hope I can make good friends where we can learn from each other and become better persons!

Unfortunately, I'm living with my parents so I'm unable to host (did you know Hong Kong is the most unaffordable place on Earth for 8 years in a row now?) When I get my own place, I'll be sure to reciprocate.

Interests

I guess a common theme with all my interests is that I love learning something new all the time haha.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music - Mainstream stuff are good enough. And then there's Muse, MAGIC! and Macklemore.
Movies - Plot twists blow my mind, like Christopher Nolan's
Books - Usually self help stuff, since I'm into self improvement
Games - Board games or silly mobile games (like Hearthstone and Clash Royale)

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Does quitting my well paying corporate job and exploring the realms of the unknown count?
I've skydived as well, but I don't think that compares to all the other stories I'm reading on the CS profiles here haha.

Teach, Learn, Share

I am a curious guy and so I have lots of interests, especially in learning skill based activities. My dad is a teacher and I think I picked up his passion in teaching. I enjoy it a lot when other people learn and understand something new.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I'll be happy to share stories and any skills I know. I particular love playing 'go'/'baduk' which is a board game from ancient times. It's simple to learn but the complexity and layers behind it is incredible. It was really sad when AlphaGo was finally able to beat a human in 2016, but it's still awesome to play.
From a professional perspective, I'm pretty good with numbers, business intelligence and excel spreadsheets. I'll be happy to help with those if you are interested haha.
