About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Avoid NEWS like the plague!

ABOUT ME

I am a solipsistic wandering libertarian... who beleives in long odds and who has always been a fan of sucker bets like romance, liberty and freedom of expression. I fall in love easily and often, I drink, read and converse openly (not necessarily in that order). If I can't find anything interesting to say I'll just make shit up.

I believe that twenty years from now I will be more disappointed by the things I did not do than by the ones I did do, hence I spend an appreciable amount of time digging through the trash heap of modern society hoping to unearth something worthwhile. While the payout is often few and far between, I've found that to intensely like something (or even someone), even if it's some silly passing fad like music or literature, film, lifestyle(s) or even an obscure culture that only a handfull of others anywhere appreciate, is to forge a relationship just as sincere and endearing with those brave souls who cared enough to dig themselves.

Hence I do thrive on spontaneity... continuously throwing off the bowlines, sailing away from the safe harbour... catching the trade winds in my sails. Exploring. Dreaming. Discovering...

All the while with the belief that life... is way tooooo short... to just be!

PHILOSOPHY

"Do I really look like a man with a plan, Harvey? I don't have a plan. The mob has plans, the cops have plans. You know what I am, Harvey? I'm a dog chasing cars. I wouldn't know what to do if I caught one. I just *do* things. I'm a wrench in the gears. I *hate* plans. Yours, theirs, everyone's"

All in all I feel that life is so constructed that an event does not, cannot, will not, match the expectation...

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Apart from CS taking a U turn on what it stood for I've had enough experiences to to find out how great this is!!! Can't think of a better way to get to know a place, meet people, and experience world culture(s)...

I was diligently spreading the word and idea of couch surfing to everyone I know. So far I have freaked out most I have spoken to and my crusade has gained me ridicule and bad insults - yet I solder on...

But the New Privacy and Data Protection Terms on CS along with its commercialisation.... has kind of put me of CS...

Interests

Travelling/Photography/Films/Whisk(e)y/Eating... I have the attention span of a gnat... hence my interest seem to be quite seasonal and if not seasonal, habitual...

I have a sick passion for movies. I do spend a lot of time being a foreigner (someone said... 'There are no foreign lands. It is the traveler only who is foreign) and an unhealthy zeal for photography when not eating.

While I have a pathological need to travel frequently... I'm bit of a vagabond... born in one place (Sri Lanka), grew up in another (Dublin), and now alternate between cities... every few weeks...

Music, Movies, and Books

Books... On The Road, The Unbearable Lightness of Being, Duende, Women, 1984, A Clockwork Orange, Heart of Darkness, Of Mice and Men... and the list goes on...

Music... it spans from the likes of The WHO and Pink Floyd to the the Smiths... generally the more depressing the music the more fascinated I’m by it!

As for movies, they range from Sunset Boulevard to Cinema Paradisio and City of God to The Dark Knight...

I'll save the rest (along with the books and music), for anyone who's interested... over a cuppa something...

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Being able to travel the world is amazing enough... apart from that, I've fucked and I've fought, I seen wonderous things with my eyes, I've starved and I've drunk my throat raw. I've met some of the most intellectual minds of my generation and made a complete fool of myself. I've been broke and flush and can't honestly choose which I prefer, but I do know I am endlessly fascinated by people no matter how much I claim to love or hate them.

Teach, Learn, Share

As Cesare Pavese said... “Traveling is a brutality. It forces you to trust strangers and to lose sight of all that familiar comfort of home and friends. You are constantly off balance. Nothing is yours except the essential things – air, sleep, dreams, the sea, the sky – all things tending towards the eternal or what we imagine of it.”

Therefore with this in mind... I make dinner and you teach me how to say "someone ate my luggage" in Cantonese! You make a cuppa and I make you laugh! We play whatever and I cheat! You sing and I doze off! We eat chocolate and drink whisk(e)y for breakfast! I see you off and say Slán go fóill or arrivederci or something to that extent! Or you take me to the airport and give me an envelope saying _ _ _ _ _ _

What I Can Share with Hosts

I have a pretty wild imagination which has spawned a talent to tell pretty convincing lies. Sometimes I can't remember if what I am telling people is true or fantasy... I also have an incredible ability to remember useless facts... (such as - Giraffes are the only animals born with horns) this way we never run out of a conversation topic...
