About Me

CURRENT MISSION

My partner Lauren and I are travelling down the Andes, hoping to meet lots of lovely people on the way (as well as see cool stuff of course).

Mi pareja Lauren y yo viajamos desde Colombia hasta Chile, incluyendo Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia y Argentina. Nos encantaría conocer mucha buena gente mientras ver nuevas cosas :).

ABOUT US

We're two pale English folk exploring South America for the first time and trying (so far mostly succeeding) to avoid sunburn. I'm a Biology teacher and Lauren works in the charity sector. At home Lauren is an activist working with Acorn to improve housing and tenants' rights (I occasionally help when there's a picket to go to). I sing and play guitar in a band with my friends (We're called Brass Pigeon - https://youtu.be/MN3vzEAH61Y).

Lauren is a vegetarian who has successfully taught me that vegetables can taste really nice.

I like to think we're both pretty nice, so anything else you're wondering please ask :)

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I've hosted and surfed in Europe and Asia. Lauren is new to the website but is keen to get involved, we'd each like to host again when we're settled back in the UK.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I've hosted a few people in Dublin, Nottingham, Sevilla and Chengdu, surfed a few nice places in China, Ireland, Mann, France, Spain and Italy (and of course the UK). I've also made a lot of friends though Couchsurfing, including a couple very close friends :).

Interests

We both like doing some walking/hiking, cooking, and of course music, reading and some TV shows.

Lauren has learned some salsa akong with some bits of other dances, and I like playing music.

We'd be interested to learn about whatever you're into though tbh :).

It's not hard to get us talking about politics, but we can behave if you're not interested yourself ;).

Music, Movies, and Books

Hmm, a difficult one, the boring answer is a bit of everything...

In terms of TV shows, we like BoJack Horseman, Black Books, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Tuca and Bertie, Black Mirror, Father Ted, among many others.

Aside from that, I'll just leave my old answer for myself for now:

For me - If I had to pick favourites of each -- Film: Anything but horror and lazy rom coms... Favourites include Ex Machina, Clockwork Orange, Get out, Fight Club, Joyeux Noel, Lord of The Rings (whole trilogy, not the Hobbit ones), Hot Fuzz, V for Vendetta, Amelie, Juno, Persepolis...

Music: Basement Jaxx, Kid Cudi, Tame Impala, Vampire Weekend, Cat Empire, ACDC, Rolling Stones, Beatles, RHCP, Nirvana, System of a Down, Cat Stevens, Paulo Nutini, Beach Boys, Holst, Brahms, Beethoven, Bowie, Queen, Nina Simone, Fleetwood Mac, Hendrix, Bob Marley... Shit loads. Favourite song remains Mr Blue Sky.

- Books - Anything funny or involving history. Some sci fi as well, the stars my destination, flowers for algernon, brave new world etc. Also, when I had a Kindle I tried some of the classics, mostly because they're free if I'm honest, but I liked some of them!

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Went on a train taking migrant workers from Chengdu to Shenzhen, which took 45 hours, without getting off, with no bed. The first 5 hours are fine, the next 20 are horrible, after that you get euphoric.

Teach, Learn, Share

Well, I have taught English, but nitpicking people's English doesn't seem the best use of our time (unless you really want me to...).

If anybody is new to guitar I could have a go at teaching that, I also know a bit about biology, as i teach it for a living (so at least I hope I know a bit about biology...) and history, and lots of random bits of general knowledge. Unfortunately I don't have a lot of practical knowledge to share, but hopefully I'll pick some stuff up.

Lauren is very good at cooking vegetarian food (I can now cook some nice meals myself thanks to her).

We'd be interested in learning anything somebody likes to teach.

What I Can Share with Hosts

Er... a beer? Some stories about China? My most embarrassing secrets? I guess let us know if there's anything you'd particularly like. If we're with you for a few days we can try cooking.
