About Me

I'm currently living and working in Manchester. In the past I've been incredibly lucky to get the opportunity to visit a range of far flung locations, though there's always more to explore!

In my spare time I like to spend a lot of time in the kitchen, cooking for friends and family, baking bread and brewing beer. I've recently gotten into the world of fermented food, and there's normally a few mysterious jars quietly bubbling away around my kitchen.

Beyond that I'm just trying my best to be a good guy and broaden my horizons. I'm pretty open-minded and enjoy meeting new people and trying new things.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Having been lucky enough to have travelled a fair bit about ten years ago, and again more recently, I've met many people kind enough to let me sleep in their homes. After realising couchsurfing was a thing, I spent a bit of time hosting folks whilst studying for my undergrad and met some great people.

All of our best experiences on the road so far have been discovering little secret spots and things do thanks to local knowledge. Now that I'm settled in Manchester for the foreseeable future, I'm happy to impart some of the same recommendations that I've benefited from in the past.

Interests

I'm a bit of a kitchen scientist and love cooking, baking, fermenting and brewing. My friends tell me I'm a pretty good cook, and although I cook vegan for myself I love cooking for every dietary preference and learning new recipes. I've been brewing beer for a few years, and worked as a brewer for the last year, so I know how to brew some mean hooch.

I'm pretty practical and like building and fixing stuff. Right now this mostly takes the form of bike building and gardening, but in the past I've converted a old Ford Transit Connect to campervan and used it to travel through Europe for two months.

My other interests include climbing mountains, camping, scuba-diving, skateboarding badly, and podcasts.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music.
A huge range, but have been spending a lot of time with rap for the last few years. The rest of my music taste has spiralled out of samples/instrumental hip hop. I have a secret love for ambient/electronic music which is in no way related to my other musical tastes.

Movies.
Documentaries and near future sci-fi are my favorites. I'm especially interested in learning more about politics, and the way people get together to shape their communities.

Books.
I'm an erratic reader who often picks up a new book and abandons the old one unfinished. I lean towards non-fiction and philosophical, my favourite author is probably Aldous Huxley.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Maybe scuba diving in old world war two shipwrecks in the Philippines. Floating inside a pitch black oil tanker, meters below the surface with only a flashlight was a pretty surreal experience!

Teach, Learn, Share

I'm up for recipe swapping - I can cook vegan, bake a mean loaf of bread, make you a sourdough starter, brew up some beer, or ferment you some kimchi. I want to learn how to BBQ and smoke food, cook better curries, and bake vegan cakes.

If you've got something broken and a few tools, I'll try and might even fix it (no promises).
