About Me

So, yet another update is in order. I have spent the last 8 months traveling throughout Europe with my girlfriend, (her profile here).
https://www.couchsurfing.com/people/leanne-ireland
That has alas come to a close. She has returned home to the US, where I am on my way to join her. However, due to circumstances beyond my control, I must wait a couple months before joining her directly. Therefore, an excuse to continue traveling a little bit longer seems to have presented itself. :) I am ok with this.
In quick summary, I am a completely blind backpacker and have been traveling on and off, more on than off, for about 4 years. While traveling, I try to spend equal amounts of time pursuing advocacy projects to enable the blind and visually impaired throughout the world to travel independently and confidently, sampling the local cuisine and alcohol, and, for lack of a better word, sight-seeing.
This year I have been through the Balkins, Italy, Germany and a few other places. Now I am on my way to the UK, with my goal being Scotland. If you are reading this, chances are I am already amongst the Scottish, and probably thoroughly baffled at all the English.
Things I have done with couchsurfers:
A unique experience I can offer is the chance to travel with me throughout your local city blindfolded and with a cane, learning what it is like to experience traveling from a new and unique perspective. You will of course be completely safe with me. This was introduced by a Czech couchsurfer I met while in Canada. Take it or leave it, but it's fun. :)
Activities: Bring it on. I love camping, drinking, tours, sailing... Anything and everything you can suggest I'm game to try.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I'm on couchsurfing for the people. In the 4 years I've been in this community, I've yet to meet a better group of people, like-minded travelers and friendly hosts and guests. People are good, and couchsurfing shows that very well.
COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

.

I have surfed pretty extensively, as recorded in my references. I also host when I can and am stationary. This will become more pronounced soon, as I am returning to Austin to start a... well, what I'm told by non-travelers is a real life. We'll see.

Interests

So, since couchsurfing is doing some kind of weird datamining thing with our listed interests, I'll revise it. Previously it had decided I was into magic and occultism? I don't know where it got that from...

Here we go. Brandy, tech, books (hard sci-fi and fantasy mostly), adventures, social gatherings, global politics, philosophy, scotch... and more!

Music, Movies, and Books

Perhaps my favourite books are those that trend toward dark fantasy or hard sci-fi. I also love historical fiction though, especially Bernard Cornwell's works. Within the aforementioned genres, my favourites would be the Acts of Caine series, Brandon Sanderson's works, Asimov, Ben Bova, Clarke, Neverness, Schild's Ladder, and so on.
Music is too comprehensive to list. Musically, my preferences go toward metal generally, but I also have a healthy amount of Hindi baliwood music, classical, acoustic folk, ambient, and more. Indeed, if you name the genre, I probably have it.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Probably the most amazing thing I've experienced was the Amazon basin in Peru, where I lived with the Natives for a couple weeks about 4 years ago.
Ask more if you're curious.

Teach, Learn, Share

It depends on what people want to learn I suppose. I know a bit about a lot of things, but most of it is kind of niche. Goalball, for instance, is a violent blind only sport that's fun to play, but weird to watch. I'm a bloody good cook if I say so myself, and cooking with a blind person is probably not something everyone has done. Also, I can talk for days about high quality alcohol. You probably don't want to get me started on that one...

What I Can Share with Hosts

I'm happy to cook for you, and can do so drawing from a large number of cultures. I can also make drinking alone much less depressing. :)
