About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To travel overland to Nepal and India, and back again...

ABOUT ME

Hello, this is Katie. I'm half way through a Geography and Politics degree at the University of Edinburgh, having a break from academia to learn about the world first-hand for a year. I really enjoy meeting new people, hearing their stories and thoughts and philosophies, there is so much to learn from people. I like pitching in and being useful and learning new skills along the way. I enjoy cooking and eating. I like being outdoors, exploring and pushing myself physically (not too much, I'm not hard core, I just like satisfying views).

I don't want to speak too much on Jonny's behalf, but until he edits this himself... He is becoming a wonderful jack-of-all-trades, his last worked as a gardener at a community garden in Edinburgh and before that was part of a worker's cooperative building windturbines. He loves being in the outdoors - walking, cycling, growing, building and making. He's a warm, thoughtful and interested person.

As Katie's been so kind about me I don't know what else to write.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

(Katie) In my old house in London we had some amazing people come and stay. The most memorable story belonged to an American ex-soldier who had served in Iraq. It was about his disillusionment and sense of betrayal of and by the army.

So many interesting people and cultures to learn about and from.

(Jonny) At the shared house I was living in in Nottingham before I moved to Edinburgh we had lots of lovely Couch Surfers stay with us. Many of whom ended u staying in Notts and becoming good friends.
I have so far only been involved in hosting people and haven't stayed with anyone. I am really looking forward to using CS on our travels as everyone I've met through it thus far has been wonderful.

Interests

Cycling for us both. We met cycling up the west coast of Ireland last summer, and have just finished another cycling trip through the Scottish Highlands with wwoofing and volunteering along the way.

(Katie) I love theatre; art and making things particularly as a distraction from more boring tasks; meeting new people; political debate; trying new and sometimes scary things.

(Jonny)
I love to learn new stuff about almost anything but I would say that my particular passions include, not exclusively, ecology (learning and plants and animals), bikes and alt tech, cooking/food including organic growing and permaculture and camping/hikking. I also have an intrest in all things science and enjoy reading scifi books. Just recently i have started some meditation with a friend and am really looking forward to exploring this more on our travels east.

Music, Movies, and Books

(Katie) I'm just finishing Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath, I think it's going to be my favourite book of all time.

(Jonny) Where to start... I have just finished a stint of reading anything I could get my hands on to do with the transition from hunter/gatherer to agricultural societies.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

We're just coming to the end of overland adventure from the UK to India and the most amazing thing we've experienced is the warmth, generosity and kindness of so many so called 'strangers' (many are now friends) in every country and culture we've been through along the way.

Teach, Learn, Share

(Katie) I'm an aspiring knitter, can teach you how to light a fire and am a novice masseuse.

(Jonny) I've tought some Permaculture design in the past and also green technology stuff especially with wind turbines.

Countries I’ve Visited

China, India, Kazakhstan, Nepal, Russian Federation

Countries I’ve Lived In
