About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Survive being a graduate!

ABOUT ME

I'm Jonny, born in Montreal, Canada; raised in St Albans, UK; attended university in Leeds and Washington DC. I have just reached the end of my entire education having recently graduated from Leeds. It's a pretty scary time, so I figure it's a good time to try and forget about it with some more traveling... before living in the real world.

In 2009-10 I studied abroad in Washington DC in the US, which was a challenging year that culminated in a massive road trip across the US with my best friend. We went from East coast-West, along the South, hitting all the important stops, and meeting some great people via CS along the way! I'll probably not have the time or money to do a big trip like that again any time soon, but it is undoubtedly one of the best experiences of my life - if anyone wants any tips, feel free to ask!

I'd call myself a friendly, easygoing person, love a good conversation and a great night out (as well as a great night in!)

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Surfing and hoping to host in London soon!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Last year me and my best friend Couchsurfed a number of times on our 2 month road trip across the US, staying in places like Tampa, New Orleans, Houston, Austin and San Francisco. The experience surpassed our expectations and helped make the trip as brilliant as it was; some of these cities just wouldn't have been the same had it not been for the generous people we met via CS.

Living in shared university accommodation with 6 other people meant hosting has been difficult for me, but I'll be moving to London (near the new Olympic stadium!) in a few months and hope to start then.

Interests

I'm REALLY into films, I've seen loads and loads; chances are if you like movies, we'll have a lot to talk about! The same goes for TV shows.
Politics, literature, the arts all interest me, but I love going out as well: bars, restaurants, shopping etc. I'm probably more of a city person, but whenever I get to the country I love walking/hiking, horseriding and canoeing (hopefully a lot of that this summer) and, on the rare occasion I can afford it, I ski.

Music, Movies, and Books

Films: too many to list them all.. my fave directors are probably Kubrick and Paul Thomas Anderson, and fave films include: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Seven, Mulholland Drive, Shawshank Redemption, Pan's Labyrinth, Volver, Magnolia, The Shining, Midnight Cowboy, Sunset Boulevard... I have a mammoth DVD wallet thing I travel with so can watch movies on the road, haha.

TV: I watch a lot of US TV shows as well, especially cable HBO type shows like The Wire, Dexter, Deadwood, Breaking Bad, Sopranos, True Blood, Weeds, Mad Men, as well as West Wing, Friends, Buffy, DS9, How I Met Your Mother, Community, Modern Family and BSG. British shows: This Life, Prime Suspect, The Office!

Books: God of Small Things, Giovanni's Room, Atonement, L.A. Confidential, Pride and Prejudice, Beloved and Harry Potter (of course)

Music... quite a mix, always looking for more!: PJ Harvey, Bjork, Sigur Ros, Joni Mitchell, Massive Attack, Goldfrapp, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Tori Amos, Laura Veirs, Nina Simone, Kate Bush, Rufus Wainwright, Ani DiFranco, Amy Winehouse, Fiona Apple, Sheryl Crow, Portishead, David Bowie, The Smiths.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Travelling across the US with my best friend. Best single moment was probably making an unplanned, spontaneous trip to the Horseshoe Bend in Arizona... my photos speak for themselves, completely awesome.

Teach, Learn, Share

I'm not sure whether I'm a worthy teacher of anything useful, but I'd like to think I'm a pretty good cook, and, being an English student, an alright writer as well.
