About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To quote the MacAruthur Foundation: "Working for a more just, verdant, and peaceful world."

ABOUT ME

I'm a former journalist turned environmental activist, and I'm originally from South Louisiana. That means I like to eat, drink, dance and generally make merry - but also that I have a very big bone to pick with the fossil fuels industry. Right now, I'm writing research reports for political campaigns, most of them centered around environmental issues.

HOWEVER in September, I'm leaving my job and planning a move back down South, where I plan to pursue SCUBA diving and travel journalism. I'm strongly considering Atlanta as my new home base, largely because it is centrally located to a lot of places my boyfriend and I care about (he's a musician). We're planning a visit in June!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I used couchsurfing for several weeks on my epic road trip through the Southeast this past fall, and it was an amzing experience. Otherwise, I'm brand new to couchsurfing, but I'm highly social and love to swap stories with strangers, so it's right up my alley.

Interests

Capoeria and brazilian dance; riding my new road bike for miles and miles; seeing live music (especially anything with brass); exploring swamps, jungles, and green mountains; politics (because I have to); and scuba diving.

Music, Movies, and Books

Books: The Power of One, House of Leaves, A Tale of Two Cities, Tropical Nature, the Clan of the Cave Bear, the Power of Myth, The Third Chimpanzee, Written on the Body.

Shows: Firefly, Carnivale, Dr. Who, Sherlock, Arrested Development, and Naruto

Food: My off-the-beaten path choices are Korean, Ethiopian, Cajun, and (coastal) Ecuadorian.

Most of my favorite movies are foreign: Triplets of Belleville, House of Flying Daggers, Hero, Paprika, the original Drunken Master, Solo Quiero Caminar, Y Tu Mama Tambien, virtually anything by Hayao Miyazaki, and Amelie. American movies? Wes Anderson is one of my favorite directors. I'm also a sucker for the new breed of graphic-novel inspired movies, such as the Watchmen and Sin City. I loved Inglorious Basterds. The tree-hugger in me loved Avatar.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I'm always the most awestruck when visiting the tropics. I spent an amazing two weeks in Belize, during which I saw a tapir while I was tubing down a river in a jaguar preserve, and while diving off the coast, I saw a large pod of dolphins patrolling the reefs, hunting for food.

Countries I’ve Visited

Bahamas, Belize, Chile, Ecuador, France, Greece, Italy, Spain, United States

Countries I’ve Lived In
