About Me

Hi there! I'm Jordyn, a 21 year old who's ready for adventure and cultural experience! I've always loved exploring and trying new things, and travelling is sure to help me do just that. I am always ready to take on new challenges and new adventures to gain new experiences - and hopefully some new friendships- along the way! I'm hoping to see some sites (and am more than happy to have a friend to visit the sites with) and I also want to experience some local living and culture.

Some interesting things about me is that I'm athletic (and love being active in any and every way), have a passion for saving the environment, am big into the arts (particularly the dramatic arts, though I'm currently learning guitar, too), and eat like an elephant (and though I've been asked if it's a hollow leg, it's really just due to my healthy appetite and willingness to eat new foods).

I always try to keep a positive and polite attitude (it must be my Canadian ways, eh?). Also, I can talk anyone's ear off about pretty much anything (but you can tell me to be quiet if you need to :-P ). Overall, I like to think I'm a pretty joyous, friendly, and energetic person who's ready to gain some new experiences on my travels!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I'm on couchsurfing because I am a student (who must pay for university), and saving money is of top priority. There is a lot I want to see on a tight budget! Of course, gaining experiences of the world and the cultures within is also something I highly value, and so I'm trying to find the best means to gain this experience, see the sights I want to see, while still ensuring I can gain my education.

I'd also really like to experience some of the local life - sure seeing all of the "tourist" attractions (and I am always open to having a tour buddy for those tourist sites) but also gaining better insight into the local livelihood of the region/country, and what makes it's culture unique.

Interests

I'm pretty passionate about life, and the opportunities it brings. I have a love for sports (though I'd rather be the one in the game than watching), adoration for everything in the arts (more so music, dance and drama, though I can dabble in appreciation of the visual arts too), I enjoy spending time in nature, and I'm a huge fan of constantly learning from the people around me. I am also a total geek who loves reading and talking about my area of study in university (so pretty much anything environmentally related).

Music, Movies, and Books

I LOVE indie music (anything not mainstream); this generally includes anything unique, uplifting/bubbly (like me), or acoustic

I can't really choose a favourite movie, but to help narrow it down, I love independent films (no surprise there, eh?) and movies that make me feel something (which usually results in me crying a lot during the film). That being said, I strongly dislike horror (more so when it has a lot of blood - I personally don't like the gruesome scenes that most horror films have). Now, to try and name some (of the many) films that I like: Pride and Prejudice (with Keira Knightley - one of my favourite actresses), Harry Potter series, Pirates of the Caribbean, In Your Eyes (indie film), Belle (indie film), The Immigrant (AMAZING indie film - I strongly suggest it), Very Good Girls, The Pretty One (another AMAZING indie film), and Wish I Was Here. Whew! And that's only a few off of the top of my head. :-)

Now, on to books: I love fantasy novels. I find them fascinating because of the opportunity to stretch one's imagination beyond belief to a place of unlimited possibilities. Though I admit that during school I often catch myself only reading textbooks, some books that I've enjoyed have been the Harry Potter series, The Scarlet Letter, Jane Eyre, and any Jane Austen book.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I wouldn't say anything I've done has been particularly amazing, but there are many experiences I'm proud to say I've been a part of:
- the Ride to Conquer Cancer (200km bike ride over two days, where I raised $2,500 for cancer research)
- created Vacation with Donation (collected medical supplies, school supplies, and clothing for a vacation amongst some high school friends to Cuba - a softer version of a mission trip)
- directed a devise theatre piece at a local theatre group
- was a Residence Assistant at my university, helping first-year students as they underwent their transition from high school to university both socially and academically (I won some awards because I was pretty good at building a sense of community)
- completed a half-marathon (21km) running...non-stop (my legs felt like jello afterwards)

Teach, Learn, Share

I can talk for days about anything environmental, whether it be about geomorphology of a region, global warming/global environmental change, deforestation, industrial waste/waste disposal, or government policies on the environment. I'm passionate about the environment, so knowledge and understanding of its importance is something I love to share with others. (But don't worry, I don't lecture). :-)

I would love to learn about, well, ANYTHING that anyone has to offer. I love learning languages, learning guitar (though only from youtube, which means progress is slow), and literally everything else that the world can offer me. Part of living (and adventure) is a willingness to try new things - needless to say I'm super open to learning about anything and everything a host can share!

What I Can Share with Hosts

I'm big on sharing friendship, stories, experiences, etc. I'd love to learn about life in the given country (or region), and hopefully can better understand the culture that my host is a part of and learn about the traits and nuances that make it so unique! In turn, I'd love to answer any and all questions about where I'm from, where I've been, and my own life experiences.

Hopefully, in turn, for being given entry into my host's home, I can return the favour if ever they travel to my area in Canada. I'm really big on making sure that the people around me feel they have gained from our relationship, so I hope my host can feel open to accepting what I can offer them as a traveler, and hopefully a future friend.
