About Me

CURRENT MISSION

I had packed up my life and moved onto my bike..and thought I was moving into a lifestyle, and headed much further south than the US boarder.. but it got cold, and Durham pulled me in!

ABOUT ME

I am an Outward Bound Instructor, and I love to live simply by the pillars we preach: Craftsmanship, Physical Fitness, Self Reliance, and above all, Compassion and Service. I'm fairly outgoing, pretty positive, often loving, usually indecisive & hopefully fairly humble. My favorite quote this season is by Frederick Douglass: "If there is no struggle, there is no progress."

PHILOSOPHY

Service with humility, progress with compassion. The struggle is important. We need more struggle, but we need more community around the struggle as well. Struggle teaches you you are worth something, that you can take care of yourself and are capable of more than you think. No wonder ours is a disease of comfortable disaster? Get OUT! Challenge yourself; the couch can wait, the weather is calling.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I like to help, clean, cook and converse. I like to leave things better than i found them, and I am very sensitive to things, so i will notice quickly if your kitchen say, is out of soap or your floor could use a sweeping. I like being a sneaky good fairy guest.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

i have used it a few times when I was on my great bike adventure back in 2012. I hope to have a place to stay soon where I can host people!

Interests

I love being outside and in nature. I love bikes, and biking them, i love fly fishing, back packing, trucks, hiking, playing, pranking, singing, talking, off roading, hiking big mountains, swimming in wild places, hiking on islands, sailing, swinging from tress, climbing in them first, friends, dancing and being an Outdoor Educator.

Music, Movies, and Books

A Prayer for Owen Meany,John Irving. Drop City by TC Boyle, Outward Bound USA, Josh Miner. The Wooden Nickle, Bill Carpenter.
I'm a big fan of the Avett Brothers, Gillian Welsh, Justin Townes Earle, elliot smith, the Pixies, The Head and the Heart, The Clash, Tom Petty, Tori Amos.. all over the map really.
Movies? pulp fiction, clerks, Amelie, the Birds, breakfast club, say anything, sixteen candles, Drive, Forest Gump, Empire Records, if you build it they will come..(?) Some kind of wonderful

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Lately, staring at the Library of Congress; thinking about this country, the morals it was built on and our evolution as a culture. In the past a little further, a good powder day in the back woods of Vermont, or sitting at the top of a chute in Argentina- ready to ride! Sailing through the islands of Maine, swimming at night in phosphorescence, or engaging with Outward Bound Instructor peers on those islands about issues that affect our teaching.. I love how these things natural and communal make me think hard and smile loud!

Teach, Learn, Share

I have realized that it's really important to ground yourself in something concrete that you love to do. Becoming a master at a skill you appreciate is a good way to focus your energy and life work if you are feeling particularly unclear. It took me longer than I like to admit to figure this out; but I'm excited to move in a direction that is clear since realizing it.

Countries I’ve Visited

Argentina, Ecuador, Spain, United States
