About Me

I'm currently doing my Masters of Economics at the University of British Columbia in Canada. Originally from Toronto, but I moved out west partly for school and partly for mountains!

I have a beard. I know that might sound like a superficial thing to mention, but I really do think that "bearded" is an accurate description of myself. I've been told I'm very Canadian given my love for hockey and maple syrup, I also planted trees for a summer and I do say "eh" a lot. I'm a vegan and an avid environmentalist.

A couple years ago I planted over 100,000 trees during my 12 weeks planting trees in Northern Canada. BBC had a series on the "World's Toughest Jobs" and even featured an episode on tree planting in Canada!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

The people, not the places, make the trip. Last year I studied for a semester in Bristol, England and I quickly fell in love with traveling, before then I had rarely traveled outside of North America. While in Bristol, I was living in a huge flat with people from the UK, Ireland, Spain, France, Italy, Portugal, Germany, and even Australia. It was amazing and I am forever grateful for the opportunity to live with and learn from people from around the world. I'm on couchsurfing to continue learning and sharing.

Interests

-I love to bike, it's my favourite way to see a city or better yet, given enough time, an entire country. One day I want to bike across Canada.
-I play ultimate frisbee at university and enjoy tossing around the disk with friends. My ideal day consists of a frisbee, hammock, slackline, speakers, a couple drinks, and a couple friends.
-I play guitar and bass.
-I love to camp, I used to lead canoe trips in Northern Canada over the summers.
-I love chess, although I'm quite the patzer. Recently I've gotten into watching MatoJelic's chess YouTube channel - he's awesome.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music: I'm going to give a cop out answer and say that "I listen to everything" ...nevertheless, Phish and The Grateful Dead are my go-tos. But generally speaking, jam, jamtronica, reggae and funk are my favourite genres.

Movies: Admittedly I don't watch a ton of movies, but my favourite right now is probably One Hot American Summer, it's real goofy. As for TV, I'm a big fan of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia & The Simpsons. Black Mirror is also amazing - Charlie Brooker is a genius. I frequently insist that the episode with synthetic human memory is the best hour of TV I've ever seen.

Books: I read a lot of non-fiction, typically things related to economics like Predictably Irrational, Freakonomics, Nudge, and Picketty's Capital in the 21st Century...I find that stuff really interesting.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

After years of disliking tomatoes I knew something had to give. Somehow I knew there was this entire world out there that I was missing out on. Every day during my first year of university I got lunch at the same salad stand. And everyday I would ask the person behind the counter for just ONE cherry tomato. They would usually give me a funny look, and sometimes they misheard me and gave me many tomatoes...those days were tough. Did I hate it? Absolutely - with every fiber of my being. But I stuck to it and now I have emerged on the other side. Yes, that's right, I did it. Today, I proudly describe myself as a tomato lover.

Teach, Learn, Share

I studied liberal arts in my undergrad so I like to think of myself as someone who's well-versed in a lot of different fields. I've taken courses from philosophy and contemporary history to physics and linear algebra. I've seen most of Canada and am well on my way to seeing most of the world. Like all of us on here I'd love to hear and share some of my favourite travel moments.
