About Me

For the last 10 years, I've been living in New York City. I live with my partner, Suzanne, within the
the quaint Brooklyn neighborhood of Prospect Heights - just a short walk from Prospect Park.
These days that's often where you'll find us, strolling through the park with a dog, some friends, and maybe a beer, especially if it's a sunny day.

I love the city and take advantage of it often - restaurants, theater, music, museums, etc and also really love introducing new people to it as well. And while NYC obviously holds a special place in my heart, I also really love to escape the chaos of the city as much as I can. I travel often and and am passionate about seeking out new experiences, new places, and new people.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

tldr - I'm looking to make some friends/connections with locals in the Rocky Mountains! I'm a solo traveler and am extremely flexible about where to crash. Any couch will do! Just be sure to let me pick up the dinner check!

Longer Version:
I first joined couchsurfing back in 2010. At the time, I was still a year away from graduating university. I had basically no money to speak of, and was getting ready to set off on a six-week backpacking trip from Amsterdam to Damascus. Looking back at that time now, I can say - without a doubt - that those experiences couchsurfing were some of the most memorable and cherished travel experiences of my life. The people I met and the experiences we shared were consistently awesome. (just FYI - Almost all of those couchsurfing bookings were made on my friend's account at the time, so that's why my account doesn't show them, unfortunately.)

The sad truth though is: as time went on , I couchsurfed less and less. And worse yet, I stopped meeting as many locals while I traveled. That's really the main reason why I'm getting back onto the platform... I miss that time when I was meeting more locals and stumbling on experiences I never would have managed if staying in some random hotel by myself.

Fast foward to today and I'm in a very different life stage than I was in my early 20s. Back then, couchsurfing was not just a way to meet locals but it was also the only way I could even afford to travel. Today things are a bit different; I can totally afford a hotel, but I'd just prefer not to travel way if I don't have to. Given the choice between paying for a room versus having a unique experience with a local host and treating them to dinner/drinks/whatever... it's just a no-brainer. Let's hang out and let me pick up the tab! :)

The other major change is my ability to host! In a couple of months, I'll be moving into a 2 bedroom apartment that will include a home office and a pull-out couch for weary travelers. Especially how hard it probably is for NYC tourists to find a reasonably priced place to stay, I'm so excited to open my home to fellow couchsurfers. More details to come!

Interests

I've recently gotten really into skiing. I discovered a love for skiing just a few years ago and am making every effort I can to blow off work, hit the slopes, and work my way up to more challenging runs. I'm stiill TERRIBLE at skiing, but am excited about getting better this year! I'm hoping this will finally be the year that I get comfortable in the Vail backbowls!

I'm also kinda dorky. I work in technology and frequently spend my workdays coding. I like the work that I do and tend to 'geek-out' about the possibility and pitfalls of technology/AI today, but I also love discussing with folks where tech is falling short of what we really need.

I used to love discussing politics too - and I still will occasionally - but that topic's become a bit sour lately so I tend to stay away from it altogether.

Music, Movies, and Books

Oh man. That's a long conversation. Let's do that over drinks.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I lived in Syria immediately before the Civil War started. It was the best place I have ever lived, and still periodically get sad when I remember that I won't be returning there anytime soon. :(

Teach, Learn, Share

I grew up playing Piano and still occasionally touch a Ukelele so I'd be happy to teach/share what I can there... but truthfully my strongest skills these days are technical ones. Have a technology related question? I might be able to help! Other than that, if you're in NYC I will gladly give you a tour of some of my favorite spots in Brooklyn!

What I Can Share with Hosts

Dinner, drinks, great conversation, and a couch/bed in NYC. Oh and also NYC bagels. I bring bagels everywhere! If you have a request, let me know!!
