About Me

Justin Hayward said "the trees are calling [him] near, [he's] got to find out why." For me, nothing has ever been closer to explaining why I must travel. Far away places are calling to me, and I have to go find out why.

I have spent time in college studying both environmental science and linguistics. I really love nature, and all the different shapes of the earth. Mountains and trees are my favorite.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I like to travel with Couchsurfing, and workaway -- these kinds of things that allow us to experience life somewhere else for a while.

Traveling for me is definitely not this typical tourist vacation to just go spend money somewhere else and see what people choose to show you. I want to see what's really there. I want to know how people think and live in different towns around the world.

I would rather go to another town and stay with a family, get to know the place, than to travel across a country going place to place, knowing none of them and consequently none of the country.

Interests

I spend most of my free time studying languages, sociology, and eco stuff. I write music and read a lot of literature. I went several years without reading any fiction; now I'm reading a lot of Romantic era stuff, and lots of Latin American literature.

Music, Movies, and Books

TV/Movies: Star Wars, Mrs. Doubtfire, Star Trek, Friends, HIMYM, Forrest Gump, The Aristocats, The Land Before Time, Midnight in Paris, Back to the Future, School if Rock, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (the recent film), Mozart in the Jungle, Orphan Black...

Music: The Shins, Fleet Foxes, Bad Books, Carla Morrison, Ximena Sariñona, The Moody Blues, The Doors, future soul, electronica, Haydn, Stravinsky, Tárrega...

Literature: The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Harry Potter, The Seventh Tower, Norwegian Wood, War of the Worlds, Any Ernest Hemingway, Any Gabo, currently exploring Latin American stories...

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

When I was a teenager I shot a bird with a pellet gun. It was horrible. The small bird was perched atop a very tall pole carrying the electric across a field. I plucked it from the scene, and it fell slowly, like a held breath. I immediately felt very sad for killing the bird, and I ran through the tall grass to find it. It lay motionless in the brush a yard from the foot of the pole. I carefully picked it up. I looked it over for the wound, but saw none. As I held it in my hands, it pulsed and leapt into the air. I watched it fly across the field, continuing on over the trees, eventually losing itself among other birds.

Teach, Learn, Share

I want to learn the best ways of acquiring language so that I can teach people. I want to fix language education. I can help add to your learning methods Maybe I can teach you how to look at the world as something you are not separate from.
