About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Learn to french braid my own hair.

ABOUT ME

i just got back from Syria where I was studying Arabic for 5 months, now I am back in my hometown of Providence, Rhode Island. I equally love a good conversation over dinner, a dance party (especially one with bachata/merengue music) and a quiet night reading at home. I love meeting and connecting with new people and I am a loyal and enthusiastic friend.

PHILOSOPHY

Monty Python, Woody Guthrie, Bob Marley, and Saul Bellow, with a pinch of Rage Against the Machine.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I couchsurfed a bit in the Middle East recently (July, 2010). I don't have a permanent address, but when I do I will be very excited to host surfers! I love the idea of connecting the world's adventurous, free-spirited, sweet & salty people.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I met great people in the West Bank, Israel, and Egypt through CouchSurfing, and they introduced me to many wonderful things.

Interests

Laughing; reading books and having conversations that expand my reality; visiting new places and getting to know them through the people who live there; working for global justice at the community level; learning new languages; memorizing the words to songs; cooking; eating; drinking tea.

Music, Movies, and Books

I love all kinds of movies, music, and books and consume them like water & air. Some of my favorite music comes from Lhasa, Damian Marley, Gyptian, Van Morrison, U2, Mos Def, Belle & Sebastian, and Feist. I have a major weakness for any kind of Spanish language pop music (especially bachata), as well as top 40 American hip hop songs. Most recent book I read was A Scandalous Life: the Biography of Jane Digby.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I was in Belfast in 1998 when the Good Friday Agreement was signed, technically ending over 30 years of sectarian conflict. Seeing people celebrate in the street was pretty amazing.

Teach, Learn, Share

I know how to cook some simple, cheap, and tasty meals; I can speak Spanish; I know enough Arabic to teach the alphabet; I know how to organize any kind of event successfully; and I know how to write grants and raise money for justice projects. I would love to learn all kinds of things, especially how to play an instrument or sing better.

Countries I’ve Visited

Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Egypt, France, Ireland, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Peru, South Africa, Spain, Syrian Arab Republic, Venezuela

Countries I’ve Lived In

Egypt, Palestine, Syrian Arab Republic, United States
