ABOUT ME

Filmmaker, writer, photographer, retired magician.

Most of my time is spent working on too many things at once, making sense of the strange country I live in, unsuccessfully predicting the weather, and trying not to fall off my motorcycle (a Honda CBX250, if you're interested). When I can I direct the films I have written, read Japanese literature, travel, and when at all possible - think.

I've directed, written and produced a whole lot of other things, I run Jungle Jim Magazine, a zine for African pulp fiction, and I teach at a film school in Cape Town.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

We were in a bell tower. There was no one around. I was scared. If we got arrested I would feel responsible. We definitely weren't supposed to be there. I'd heard the police in this city took any chance to fine you. The stairs went up, they were rusting, a thick layer of dust lay on everything, on an old keyboard with wax all over it. Upwards giant bells and a view over Maputo.

Canoeing at night is like flying a boat in deep space. Dunes on either side, now look like calm asteroids. Stars up and down. The water glows when you touch it.

Teach, Learn, Share

I love sharing music - I have a lot! Tell me what you like and I'll make you a mix-tape.
I would love to learn more science. and languages. I like to learn anything. Except taxes and accounting. But if you could teach me how to enjoy taxes and accounting, that would be good too.

What I Can Share with Hosts

If we can find green bananas, I can make make Rwandan Green Banana stew... failing that, I can also make Lalagia, Greek donuts. I can tell you about South African for ages in a way I can only hope is interesting, I can make you cool mix tapes of music you probably haven't heard before.
