Why I’m on Couchsurfing

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I have unofficially hosted couchsurfers for many years, both in Chengdu and in Toronto. For 8 years or so, my ex and I hosted friends during the Toronto International Film Festival, held in September each year. We had a great, centrally located apartment, which made it an ideal place for festival goers. It was always my favourite time of year.

As a couchsurfer myself, I had my first official experience in July 2008, in Guangzhou, and it was great. I was welcomed warmly and met lots of people through the experience.

Interests

Graphic design, all things typography, China, Chinese languages, languages in general, yummy vegetarian food, yoga, film festivals, spirituality and contemporary art.

Music, Movies, and Books

Favorite movies: where to begin? So many! But Persepolis, Tampopo (classic Japanese noodle western), Rushmore and other Wes Anderson movies, About a Boy (but not the other Nick Hornby adaptations so much), quirky real-life pics like Little Miss Sunshine and Juno, French films like Amelie. Music-wise, I am a child of the 80s and proud of it! Smiths, Cure, Joy Division, New Order are all high on my list. I like some contemporary indie like Broken Social Scene, Arcade Fire, Stars, Feist and the Shins too, along with a smattering of electro, 90s lo-fi (Yo la Tengo) and composers such as Michael Nyman and Yann Tiersen (he did the Amelie soundtrack). Book-wise, I really enjoyed Persepolis and some other graphic novels, but read a wide variety of books. From political history to spirituality and creativity, I simply love reading!

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Let me think about that!

Teach, Learn, Share

I'm a yoga instructor in Chengdu, and have held ad hoc graphic design sessions for friends curious to learn more. Friends describe me as a generous teacher and I'd be happy to share what I know with others!
