About Me

**I’m not using Couchsurfing as Tinder**

Nice to meet you! My name is Juliana, and I'm from Brazil. I was born in São Paulo, the big city, and grew up in two places: São Paulo and Paraty, a small UNESCO World Heritage coastal town between the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

I have travelled a lot throughout my life and done lots of volunteer work and Couchsurfing before—nothing like meeting a place through a local's eyes. My biggest dream is to travel as much as possible while having a stable income.

Although I am 24 years old, I've done a lot. When I was 16, I moved out of my mothers' house and started living alone in Paraty. It was a lot of fun to find some independence. After I finished high school, I spent a year in São Paulo at my grandparents' home studying a preparatory course for the Brazilian SATs (test for college admissions) and saving money. I didn't know what I was saving money for, but as soon as I finished the exams, I decided to go backpacking through Latin America by bus and by myself.

It was one of the most freeing experiences I've ever gone through. I met so many people travelling by bus through Brazil, Peru, Chile, Bolivia, and Argentina, playing music in the streets and restaurants. I did a lot of volunteer work through Workaway and even visited a Chilean friend I had been friends with on the internet since I was 12 years old. I also had my first 2 Couchsurfing experiences back then, which were amazing! I'm eternally thankful for those people.

I planned to travel for 3 months and then return to Brazil to start university, but travelling brought me a lot of awareness of what I was doing with my life and reflections on the right path to follow. It made no sense anymore to settle for a university course I had no interest in for 4 years of my precious life, in a country that doesn’t offer much opportunity for growth. So I returned to Brazil and started preparing for my next trip. I worked as much as possible, got a one-way ticket to the UK, and sold all my clothes and my stuff.

And then I went to Europe! I was 19-20. I travelled through England, Wales, France, Spain, Portugal, and Belgium until the beginning of the pandemic. I was playing music in the streets and living in a car. I planned to continue travelling and go to Eastern Europe. But with the pandemic, I had to settle for a bit. Later, I decided to come to Canada to study and work, and pursue my dream of geographic freedom and financial stability.

I finished university in Vancouver and now I live in Calgary, Canada. I also have a small cleaning business in Vancouver that I manage remotely. My current goal is to have Canada as a safe port to return to during my travels. Let's see what the future will bring!

As for my interests, I love music, yoga, conversations, walking in nature, animals, food, and sharing knowledge. I like cooking, playing music, and changing my hair colour.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Couchsurfing is one of the best ways to travel. I love discovering the reality of local people and making friends by exchanging knowledge and enjoying this style of travel that is the most authentic raw experience. There is nothing like having this opportunity; the Couchsurfing community is awesome.

Nowadays, I noticed that there are a lot more active male-profiles on Couchsurfing than female profiles. I'm also here to represent the women and hopefully inspire more women to join and use Couchsurfing.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music: I am ecletic, for sure! I like everything from Brazilian music to north american pop rock. I'm a big fan of Avril Lavigne, Paramore, Demi Lovato, The Pretty Reckless, and Arctic Monkeys. But I also love Brazilian artists such as Jorge Ben Jor, Novos Baianos, and Holger. I also enjoy jazz, classical, reggae, and many other genres. I also love concerts and live music!

Movies: All Wes Anderson movies. I like movies that go out of the ordinary, like mindfuck/cult movies. Hollywood bores me, but I'm still open to watching Hollywood films if you want to! Some might surprise me.

Books: Lately, I've been into memoirs. I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy is awesome. I like real life stories. But there's nothing bad about a fiction book here and there.
