Mexico Tales...
- Pink and purple like the neon go faster stripes on my first pair of cycling shorts.
Painfully bright as you like, my retina is locked, like a moth with a death wish. Its outrageously flirtatious, in fact there are no games here, it wins hands down.
I’m besotted with this scene in front of me, this dulux palette of all shades of florescent pinks and purples. A halo of orange, yellow and gold lies above this sheet of rippling mercury. Darkening blue skies hosts a full moon high above which fights for my attention, with one eager bright shining star at its side.
Like a banged up drunk on mescal, arrested am I on the edge of this spectrum of colours. I am out at sea with 5 other Mexican surfers who have all grown up in Puerto Escondido, supposedly 3rd best beach to surf in the world aka ‘the Mexican pipline’.
I feel in good hands even though I am 10 meters away from rocks, with 6ft waves pushing me closer towards them.
Barrels roll in on the Pacific Ocean breeze to a secluded beach breaking parallel alongside me. What is most breathtaking is that the light shines through each wave as it tumbles down, backlit by the sunset with sprayed sparks flying adding more colour and dimension to this surrealism in front of me.
I have never in my life seen anything so perfect, it still brings tears to my eyes. Where have I been all this time. Missing out clearly. Unbelievable. I cannot fathom how something so spectacularly beautiful, breathtaking, awe strucking if that’s a word, can exist and only now have I been able to witness it. I don’t think I could have ever imagined it had I not witnessed it first hand. Out at sea, married to a board, otherwise I’d drown, I sit and wait and watch with the others, by the lighthouse rocky pier, to catch that perfect break to take me back to shore after the sun has set.
It looked so perfect. Too perfect, with the light, the colour, the pelicans flying along side each swell, riding the waves.
What’s amusing is that I thought I had seen it all when I had jumped out a 4 seater man plane the night before, to freefall for 1 minute at sunset. A sunset from the sky then a sunset out at sea, I can’t really ask for more.
We flew up to 13,000 feet, on the way up I had 25 mins to contemplate life on earth and waited for ‘the fear’ to kick in, which never did surprisingly. I jumped out the plane, said my fair dues to mi padre, and whilst freefalling I did indeed, not have a moment to think of anything but of how amazing it felt to be mid air, falling towards earth, from a place which can only be described as what I hope heaven to look like. There is nothing I can really compare it to. You just have to do it. It too was extravagantly epic, two days of sunsets that can never be forgotten.
