COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

My first road trip alone was taken from 6/18 to 7/2 during summer 2012. The people I met were generally kind and hospitable. I will continue to couch surf for all future endeavors.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I met with my father for the first time in 2012. We spoke on the phone, he in Tucson, Arizona, myself in Oregon. Meeting him fueled inspiration for my novel, "Rabbit." A part of the book's composition is reliant on the success of the trip I took during 6/18 - 7/2 of summer 2012, a trip to Arizona to meet my father in person for the first time. That is how I discovered couch surfing.

Teach, Learn, Share

I recommend planning your trip down to specific locations within cities. Pinpoint several local coffee shops with wifi hot spots. Also, write down the addresses and numbers of two or more backup hotels (emergencies with hosts do occur!) Most of all, give yourself enough time to enjoy a city. One day is never enough to experience what you would like to. Give yourself a minimum of two days. Four days is the magic number. Lastly, get to know your hosts before and during your trip. These could be long-lasting friendships you are forming (take it from an introvert like myself...it is difficult to step out of your shell sometimes but it's not worth pretending you're the only person alive all the time.)
