The sufficient person exercises restraint and respite not because he or she can’t perform in a scientifically prescribed, economically rational matter and there must but be content with second-best outcomes, Rather, the sufficient person exercises restraint and respite because such principles are consistent with a world that is ultimately unknowable and uncontrollable, a world where cause-and-effect relationships are deeply problematic, a world where limited predictability, system surprise, threshold, and synergistic effects are the norm, not the exception. In short, the sufficient person manages oneself and manages others in a totally different way from the way one manages in the factory or laboratory. In this messy, complex, constantly adapting world, a work simultaneously resilient and fragile, a world full of humans and human impacts, one must have wits galore to function."
